Nomadic Samuel's new guide to the best day trips from Edmonton puts Métis Crossing in a category of its own: not a quick stop, but a destination worth the longer drive.

Travel writer Samuel Jeffery's advice is simple: drive yourself the 90 minutes northeast, then let the guided cultural and wildlife experiences take over once you're here.

With the North Saskatchewan River as the backdrop, he calls it one of the few day trips where the road time pays off.

This is your view from bed. ☀️

By day, blue Alberta skies through a transparent ceiling. By night, on the right conditions, the same window opens up to a sky full of stars and the chance to witness the northern lights without ever leaving your pillow.

The Sky Watching Domes at Métis Crossing are built for exactly this moment.

Northern lights sightings are never guaranteed and depend on solar activity and cloud cover.

Written by Métis travel writer Kelsey Olsen, the list highlights Métis Crossing as a place to stay in sky-watching domes or the on-site lodge, and connect with the traditional meeting sites of the Métis people through snowshoeing, canoeing, and hiking along the North Saskatchewan River near Smoky Lake, Alberta.

Being recognized in this list alongside meaningful Indigenous experiences from coast to coast is something we're truly proud of.

The Lodge stays open year-round, which means families can spend the day outdoors exploring Métis Crossing's programs and experiences, then come back inside to warm up without the visit feeling like it's over.

There's still an evening ahead: the fireplace, the Bistro, a quiet corner of the Lounge.

For a lot of families, that's the shape of a good winter trip.
Time outside, time to reconnect indoors, and a place that makes room for both.

We're hiring a Cultural Experience Manager at Métis Crossing.

This role sits at the center of how guests experience Métis Crossing: designing programs, leading workshops, and working alongside Knowledge Holders and artisans to bring Métis culture to life for visitors of all backgrounds. It's part creative planning, part hands-on leadership, with no two days quite the same.

We're looking for someone with a background in Indigenous Studies, tourism, education, or a related field, along with real experience building and delivering programs that connect people to culture and place.

Gb&d Magazine, one of the leading voices in sustainable architecture and design, featured Métis Crossing as a real-world example of regenerative thinking in action. 🌿

Writer Jamie Miller, Director of Regenerative Design and Biomimicry at Atelier Ten, highlighted how at Métis Crossing, a planned road alignment was rerouted after it was identified as a risk to the surrounding boreal landscape and local waterways.

The land led the decision. The project improved.

Our Gathering Centre is also featured, a building designed in reference to the traditional one-room Métis cabin, purposefully flexible, welcoming, and deeply connected to the land and river on which it sits.

This is what it looks like when Indigenous knowledge and regenerative design work together.
