Moishe’s Steakhouse - Montreal’s OG Temple🩷. Picture it: The Main. People in their finest ´frocks’ lining up like it was a red carpet, but for steak. Founded by Moishe Lighter in 1938 (legend says he won it in a card game!), it became one of the city’s most beloved restaurants for over 83 years! By the time Moishe’s son Lenny ran the show, it was a family tradition for us. Valets cracked jokes while taking your keys, the packed lobby buzzed louder than Schwartz’s next door, and nobody minded the wait - because steaks were sizzling, verenikas were calling, and service was flawless. 👌 Moishe’s wasn’t just dinner. It was a piece of Montreal’s soul - served medium rare.💓 This nostalgia inspired my painting of Moishe’s old charm in the late 50’s… If you ever dined there, what’s your favourite memory? The Orange Julep… personalized, with the bride and groom and their dogs walking through the scene… special sentimental value for the couple as it’s one of their favourite landmarks in Montreal…. Ex-Montrealers always feel nostalgia for our original food landmarks… and we do have the best!

Dunn’s Delicatessen in Montreal is a blast from my past..
This was a nostalgic painting for me… For a few years while going to school, I worked weekend nights in downtown Montreal as a bartender. (Friar’s Pub, Crescent St). There were many late night, early morning noshes of the famous cheesecake at Dunn’s Deli. Cherished memories .. esp. with Matt! …
It was cool that the deli belonged to my friend Elliot’s family! 😄

It looks nothing like this anymore.
Capitol theatre is long gone, along with the Black Orchid Cocktail Lounge and Marlene Shoes.
There is no Union Jack.
And Cocktail lounges are hard to find! .matt

Bens Delicatessen was the first recorded deli to serve smoked meat in Montreal. Started by Benjamin Kravitz and family in 1908. Bens closed in 2006, but it remains in the heart of many Montrealer’s who remember it as a late-night dining fixture in downtown Montreal… including me! #514
