June is National Indigenous History Month, a time to reflect, learn, and take meaningful action in support of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis communities.

At shíshálh Nation, we invite everyone, not just this month, but year round, to move beyond awareness and toward action.

Here are some ways you can support Indigenous communities right now:

• Learn whose land you live and work on, and understand the history of that land
• Support Indigenous owned businesses, artists, and creators
• Listen to and uplift Indigenous voices in media, education, and decision making spaces
• Educate yourself about the true history and ongoing impacts of colonialism in Canada
• Attend community events, public talks, and cultural gatherings when invited
• Hold institutions accountable to meaningful reconciliation, not just words, but action

Reconciliation is not a one month commitment. It is ongoing work that requires listening, respect, and action.

We encourage everyone to take something from this list and turn it into a step forward.

We’re pleased to support a new pilot project launching this summer to help protect our coastal waters and shorelines.

In partnership with The Ocean Legacy Foundation and the Government of British Columbia, the Dock Foam Float Pilot will focus on the responsible collection and management of aging foam dock floats within the shíshálh swiya Dock Management Plan area.

From June to July 2026, dock owners, marina operators, coastal residents, aquaculture operators, and marine users can take part by accessing designated drop-off locations, limited remote servicing, and responsible processing options to help prevent foam pollution from entering the environment.

This initiative reflects our shared commitment to caring for the lands and waters of our swiya for future generations through practical, community-driven stewardship.

If you have old foam flotation materials, we encourage you to take part this summer.

This summer, a new pilot project is launching to help protect the waters and coastlines of the shíshálh swiya.

shíshálh Nation extends our heartfelt condolences to our neighbours in the Tla'amin Nation following the tragic loss of three of their Nation members in a boating accident.

We are deeply saddened by this heartbreaking news and hold the families, loved ones, and the entire Tla’amin community in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. On behalf of our híwus and híhewhíwus (Chief and Council), we express our profound sorrow and stand with you in grief and solidarity.

To our jehjeh and relatives in Tla’amin, please know that you are not alone. Our hearts are with you, and we are holding you up with love, strength, and compassion. We also want to extend our support. If there is anything needed, please do not hesitate to reach out. We have supports available and are here to assist in any way we can.

Through Salish Soils and his work advancing regenerative practices, food sovereignty, and sustainable economic development, Aaron embodies the values of caring for the land, community, and future generations.

The Indspire Awards are among the highest honours given to Indigenous peoples, recognizing outstanding achievement and leadership across Turtle Island. Aaron’s recognition is a proud moment for the entire shíshálh Nation.

Today, we gathered in community to honour and remember Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people.

We raise our hands in gratitude to everyone who came out to stand with us. Each step taken, each voice lifted, each drumbeat and each moment of silence shared carries the strength of our ancestors and the love we hold for those who are no longer with us.

We stand for our sisters, our daughters, our aunties, our friends, taken too soon and never forgotten.

We will not be silenced.
We will continue to speak their names.
We will continue to demand justice.
We will continue to fight for our stolen sisters and Two-Spirit relatives.

Our voices are powerful. Our community is strong. And together, we will keep pushing forward, for truth, for justice, and for the generations to come.

shíshálh Nation invites you to stand with us in support of our upcoming Memorial Walk honouring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit Individuals (MMIWG2S+).

Event Details:
Date: Sunday, May 3, 2026
Time: 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Meeting Point: Intersection of Cowrie Street & Ocean Avenue, Sechelt
Walk to: Hackett Park (main gathering)

The march will start at the corner of Cowrie Street and Ocean Avenue and continue to the Hackett Park bandstand where there will be speakers, vendors and performances by our shíshálh children and youth, Butterflies in Spirit Dance Troupe and hoop dancing by Gary Abbott.

Please come and help raise awareness and honour those who are gone and still missing.

shíshálh Nation is proud to stand alongside the Arrowhead Clubhouse and the important work they do for our Nation members and the greater Sunshine Coast community.

For over 35 years, the Clubhouse has created a safe and welcoming space for connection, healing, and honest conversations around mental health, addiction, and intergenerational trauma. This work continues to make a real difference for many, including our own members.

Recently, hiwus kwa’saʔlahuet Warren Paull, hihewus chusep Jamel Paul, hihewus tsesote Benny Pierre Jr., hihewus lh'ayaxwemat Selina August, and hihewus xwaʔ Phil Paul met with representatives from Arrowhead to recognize the important work carried out by the organization.

Our hands go up to Arrowhead Clubhouse for their ongoing care and commitment to our community.

On this Earth Day, we reflect on what it means to belong to this land.

Since time immemorial, the shíshálh people have held a deep historical, cultural, social, and spiritual connection to our swiya. The land and waters of the swiya are not separate from us, they are part of who we are.

Our roots go deep into Mother Earth grounding us in responsibility, respect, and care.

Today, and every day, we honour that connection by protecting these lands and waters for those who came before us and for the generations still to come.
