Meta, the owner of Facebook, began blocking news content for Canadian users on Facebook and Instagram on August 1, 2023.
The move was a direct response to the passing of Canada's Online News Act (Bill C-18), which required major tech platforms to compensate news outlets for journalism shared on their networks.
Rather than compensate real journalism, this incredibly rich company, which makes $200.97 billion every year off of people like you and me, it has just banned the news in Canada on their platforms.
This ban has directly hurt indigenous communities like the Naskapi Nation of Kawawachikamach.
The Naskapi Nation is small, just under 3,000 people.
It is difficult to filter out the noise of national and international news and to find out what is happening that is affecting our community.
This is why this page exists.
We read the news, find articles that are relevant to the Naskapi people and the surrounding area, and post them on the page, crediting the real journalists.
As a reminder, racism and vulgarity against Naskapi people or Indigenous people in general will get you banned.
