Greetings, there will be a film this Wednesday (April 1) at 7pm at Galaxy Cinema.

Meadowlarks

Director: Tasha Hubbard; Canada 2025; English; 91 min.

Based on her 2017 documentary Birth of a Family, acclaimed filmmaker Tasha Hubbard brings the story of four siblings, separated as babies during the Sixties Scoop, who are reuniting 50 years later during a week spent in Banff. An emotional journey handled with care, respect, and beauty. This film will sit with you long after the credits roll. The Sixties Scoop is the term given for the then-common practice of removing Indigenous children from their families, often without consent, and placing them with the child welfare system.

AIF presents Sing Sing on Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2024 at 7 pm @ Galaxy Cinemas, Sault Ste. Marie, ON
Director: Greg Kwedar; USA 2024, English; 105 min
Rated: PG

Based on the real-life arts rehabilitation programme founded at Sing Sing Correctional Facility, the film follows a troupe of incarcerated actors who work on plays as part of a theatre workshop at the prison. Every six months, the men gather, often looking to Divine G to help decide their next play. When he recruits a new member called Divine Eye, he gets more than he bargained for. The group’s dynamic begins to shift as the men collectively unpack the pain of their experience while undergoing the joy and escape of creativity

Colman Domingo is at the peak of his considerable powers in Greg Kwedar’s inspirational, fact-based prison drama Sing Sing. Wendy Ide, Observer (UK)

Brimming with compassion and punctuated by humour, this is a moving look at prison and prisoners. It’s both infuriating and inspirational to see so much beauty in such a harsh environment. Helen O’Hara, Empire Magazine

Ghostlight
Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2024
7 pm @ Galaxy Cinemas, Sault Ste. Marie, ON

Director: Kelly O’Sullivan, Alex Thompson
USA 2024, English; 110 min, Rated: PG

When Dan (Keith Kupferer), a melancholic middle-aged construction worker, finds himself drifting from his wife and daughter after his son’s su***de, he discovers community and purpose in a local theatre’s production of Romeo and Juliet. But as the drama on stage starts to mirror his own life, he finds the tragedies of the play too close to his own. Unwilling to confront his grief at home, he begins to confront his loss through the play. Funny and heartwarming, Ghostlight is an exploration of how we feel love and loss through art.

This deeply moving, highly intelligent film is about love, loss, grief, regret, repressed emotions, healing and the value of human connection. Its star should receive an Oscar nomination. Stephen Romei, The Australian

Standout Katherine Mallen Kupferer performance will deliver chills! Not to take away from anyone else but this maybe her best performance yet! Nagier Chambers, Big Gold Belt Media

Don't forget we have a movie this Wednesday, October 16, 2024 (tomorrow evening) at 7pm at Galaxy.

Oct. 16: Wicked Little Letters
Director: Thea Sharrock; UK 2024; English; 102 min.

A 1920s English seaside town bears witness to a farcical and occasionally sinister scandal in this riotous mystery comedy. Based on a stranger than fiction true story, the story follows two neighbours: deeply conservative local Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) and rowdy Irish migrant Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley). When Edith and fellow residents begin to receive wicked letters full of unintentionally hilarious profanities, foul-mouthed Rose is charged with the crime. The anonymous letters prompt a national uproar, and a trial ensues. However, as the town’s women begin to investigate the crime themselves, they suspect that something is amiss, and Rose may not be the culprit after all.
