🎶 It’s Concert Day 🎶

Today, we’re featuring choir member Kaisa Manttari, 1st Alto.
Kaisa joined the choir in September 2011—nearly 15 years ago—and has also served as Treasurer on the Board of Directors since 2016. Her husband, Andy, joined in 2016, making it a true family affair.

Kaisa especially enjoys the weekly practices, the challenge of learning new music, and helping to create programs that move our audience. She treasures time spent with fellow choir members, sharing a few laughs, and giving the gift of music to friends and the community.

A Canadian piece in this evening’s concert that holds special meaning for her is Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen. Her grandson is especially fond of the song, and seeing his face when we sing it truly pulls at her heartstrings.

With all the turmoil in the world right now, Kaisa is extremely proud to be Canadian and all that we stand for as a nation. Singing music written by Canadians, for Canadians, is a very special privilege.

🎶 One Day to Go 🎶

As we count down to our Spring Concert, we’re featuring longtime member Andrea Grimm-Baeuerle, 2nd Alto.

Andrea moved to Sault Ste. Marie from Germany in 1990 and quickly found her musical home with the Algoma Festival Choir. Singing since childhood—in school, church, and community choirs—she has always loved making music with others. One highlight from her early years was performing Haydn’s Creation with a provincial youth choir.

For Andrea, choir is more than rehearsal—it’s friendship, harmony, and the joy of shared music-making. Even after a long day, singing together leaves her feeling refreshed and uplifted. She especially loves performing for audiences and seeing the joy it brings.

Her favourite piece in this concert is Mountain, Sea, and Sky, inspired by the beauty of Canada’s west coast— “an amazing part of our beautiful country I’m proud to call home.” We hope you enjoy this concert as much as Andrea and the choir do!

Two Days to Go 🎶

Today, as we count down to our Spring Concert on Friday, May 1st, we’re featuring Karen Kettles, soprano and President of the Algoma Festival Choir. Karen joined AFC in 1987, commuting from Iron Bridge each week after starting her teaching career. Over nearly four decades, she’s seen the choir grow and evolve—now nearly 50 voices strong, performing everything from classical works to show tunes and folk songs. Under the direction of Stephen Mallinger, with accompanist Michael Connell, the choir continues to thrive and grow in sound and spirit.

Beyond singing, Karen has been a dedicated leader, serving on the Board for over 20 years and as President for 18. Her favourite part? Rehearsals—where the music, laughter, and sense of community come together. This concert, Karen is especially moved by “This Is My Home” by Bob Buckley—a heartfelt celebration of Canada’s diversity and shared identity.

“We may all be different, but we share a common bond. We are Canadian.”
