On The Boards Staging Company

On The Boards Staging Company ON THE BOARDS Staging Company is a Shared Platform organization - best understood as a shared resource for performing artists. It does not produce work itself.

We support artists in staging their work by providing professional and collaborative production services so they may focus on being an artist first and a producer second. Instead, it anchors the activities of independent performing artists and small arts organizations. It is known for managing the performances at The Refinery Arts and Spirit venue. The work produced there is primarily theatre, wit

h some dance and music. Last year ON THE BOARDS began a new program called “The Open Storefront Project”. With the help of business sponsors, the project offers free rehearsal space to performing artists. More about The Open Storefront can be found on it's own page: The Open Storefront Project.

Spring has sprung,
the grass is riz,
I wonder where the parking is...

Dufferin Avenue is closed to vehicles, but the sidewalk is still open! If you're coming to see Apples and Train Tracks this weekend, we recommend planning ahead, leaving early, and giving yourself time to find some parking and walk over to the theatre!

Coming up this week on the boards of The Refinery!

Apples & Train Tracks by award-winning author Arnolda Dufour Bowes
Directed by Roxanne Dicke with dramaturgy by Daniel Macdonald

Produced by Gordon Tootoosis Nīkānīwin Theatre and Burnt Thicket Theatre

April 30 - May 10

Inspired by the life of the playwright’s father, haunted by memories of being forced into a railcar and shipped away as a child, Charlie wrestles with consequences of trauma as he fights to forge a new legacy of love with his wife, Rose. Starting in 1940, the government of Tommy Douglas began the push to eradicate Métis Road Allowance Communities by sending them to remote Rehabilitation Farms in northern Saskatchewan.

Charlie, a now mid-thirties man, finds himself at a crossroads with his work, purpose, and his spouse. Bewildered by flashbacks with his mother, Bella, and the riddles of a seemingly homeless yet mystical woman, Charlie hunts for all he's been chasing, or running from; his uncertain future, and the community home that he lost.

Audience Advisory: Content not suitable for young children.

This production follows Charlie as he wrestles with intergenerational trauma and the history of Road Allowance Métis displacement. It’s a story not for sympathy, but for empathy—an invitation to walk beside and feel the truths of the past.
