We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Cris Derksen. She was an extraordinary cello artist whose talent, creativity, and passion for music touched countless lives. Her artistry and unique voice will be remembered for years to come.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, colleagues, and to everyone who knew and loved her. May her memory continue to live on through the beautiful music and legacy she leaves behind.
βSo many music lovers cried themselves to sleep last night. We messaged each other with our collective disbelief that Cris is gone.
Much should be said about Crisβ exceptional artistic genius. As a composer, as a performer, as a mentor, she was special. At the SSO we were lucky to first work with Cris in 2019, and from that moment on we got to be in the awesome club of people who found themselves in Crisβ orbit. Her 2024 performance with us was, as expected, monumental.
A friend with an immense generosity of the human spirit. A calm level head, a warm laugh, a true leader without ego, and a full heart. In this awful moment, what I am struck by is not only how many people had been touched by Cris, but that itβs clear the profound impact left on each of us.
I regularly told Cris that she was the coolest person I knew - and I suspect, like me, we all felt cooler just because we knew her.β
