**5 Things I Wish I Knew in My First Year of Running a Cake Business**
If I could go back and talk to the version of me that was just starting out — this is what I’d say. 🎂
**1. Your price is not the problem — your confidence is.**
Clients don’t just buy cake. They buy certainty. When you hesitate on your price, they hesitate too. Know your worth and say it like you mean it.
**2. Not every client is your client.**
Early on, I said yes to everything. Wrong fit clients cost you time, energy, and peace. Learn to recognize who you’re built for — and serve them exceptionally.
**3. A beautiful cake and a real business are two different things.**
Skill gets you started. Systems keep you going. Contracts, deposits, timelines, boundaries — these aren’t optional extras. They’re the business.
**4. Your portfolio is a magnet — be intentional about what you put out.**
What you post is what you attract. Post the work you want more of. Curate with intention, not just pride.
**5. Burnout is not a badge of honour.**
Doing everything alone, at all hours, for every client — is not hustle. It’s a warning sign. Build sustainable habits early or the business will cost you more than it gives.

Over a decade in, these lessons still shape how I run **Excellent Cakes N More** every single day.
