The Gordon Snelgrove Gallery is a crucial venue for new work by artists and curators both within the Department of Art and Art History and the wider community. Frequent public presentations by visiting artists, panels and screenings position it as an important hub in the arts ecology of Saskatoon. Additionally, the gallery curates The Department of Art and Art History Collection, consisting of sel

ect works from graduating students. Art from the collection is displayed throughout the Murray Building, the university library, a number of sites on campus and the gallery website. The gallery is located at 191 Murray Building on the University of Saskatchewan campus. It is typically open Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 4:30pm and closed weekends and holidays, but right now is closed to the public in deference to public health in response to the COVID 19 Pandemic.

Xiao Han is a Saskatoon-based artist and curator originally from Wuhan, China. Han’s creative practice focuses on photography, lens-based performance, and visualising emotion. Han’s research explores diasporic identity, the relationship between immigrants and Indigenous land, and contemporary gender issues through a decolonial lens. Han has produced numerous projects investigating Chinese-Canadian restaurant history, the identity of home, and the aesthetics of community relationships.

Xiao curated “Threads of Time: An Asian Heritage Month Exhibition” which was on view at Gordon Snelgrove Gallery May 4 - 22.

On this year’s exhibition, Xiao remarked, “As we move through a period of transformation in the contemporary moment, artists are visualising their feelings, thoughts, and visions for the future. The third year of USask Asian Heritage Month offers an important opportunity to amplify the voices of younger generations of Asian heritage students and alumni.

Through the presentation of their visual artworks, these artists articulate futures shaped by their own lived experiences and aspirations. This exhibition, centred on narratives of Asian heritage in May, holds particular significance within the Prairie context and contributes meaningfully to the broader fabric of Canadian cultural history.”

Abraham Galman is an interdisciplinary artist and designer based in Saskatoon, SK. As a q***r Filipino-Canadian, his practice centers the intersection of Filipino cultural heritage and q***r identity. He is currently completing his BFA in Design in Drama at the University of Saskatchewan, where his background in set and costume design continues to inform his work.

His early interest in drawing, theatre, and craft was shaped by an attraction to elaborate stage worlds and costuming, which he frequently recreated through sketching and model-making. Initially working in painting and drawing, his practice has since expanded to include more experimental approaches, integrating set and costume design methodologies into two-dimensional work.

Abraham’s works are currently included in “Threads of Time: An Asian Heritage Month Exhibition” curated by Xiao Han, on view at Gordon Snelgrove Gallery May 4 - May 22.

Please join us for a public closing reception this Thursday, May 21 from 5-8PM.

Beni Chen Shen is a multidisciplinary artist based in Saskatoon, Canada, working across painting and ceramics.
