Xiao Han is a Saskatoon-based artist and curator originally from Wuhan, China. Han’s creative practice focuses on photography, lens-based performance, and visualising emotion. Han’s research explores diasporic identity, the relationship between immigrants and Indigenous land, and contemporary gender issues through a decolonial lens. Han has produced numerous projects investigating Chinese-Canadian restaurant history, the identity of home, and the aesthetics of community relationships.
Xiao curated “Threads of Time: An Asian Heritage Month Exhibition” which was on view at Gordon Snelgrove Gallery May 4 - 22.
On this year’s exhibition, Xiao remarked, “As we move through a period of transformation in the contemporary moment, artists are visualising their feelings, thoughts, and visions for the future. The third year of USask Asian Heritage Month offers an important opportunity to amplify the voices of younger generations of Asian heritage students and alumni.
Through the presentation of their visual artworks, these artists articulate futures shaped by their own lived experiences and aspirations. This exhibition, centred on narratives of Asian heritage in May, holds particular significance within the Prairie context and contributes meaningfully to the broader fabric of Canadian cultural history.”
