A year ago, Karla Kloeble suggested to a few dancer friends who were feeling the lack of dance activities at the end of summer, that we get together and work every day for 10 days. She suggested we improvise with the theme of "contradictions". We called ourselves "4 at 4", because initially we were four dancers, and we planned to dance at 4pm every day.

With the generous help of Jackie Latendresse who donated studio time at her facility; Free Flow Dance, the four dancers; Karla, Mitchell, Jessica and myself, Miki, began working on August 28, 2015. After that first session, Jessica had to drop out, though she remained a valued supporter.

The rest of us continued, working in October, and then again in December and January, when we presented an initial version of the show; Contradictions, to an audience of 40+ supporters on January 10.

We applied for, and were successful in obtaining grants from Dance Saskatchewan and The Saskatchewan Arts Board. We continued to work on it during the late winter and spring of 2016. Karla and Mitchell developed a duet sequence and Miki presented a solo perfomance of a portion of the show at l'Artére in Montreal.

Then in June we presented a section for the WIP at Free Flow Dance, and in July a duet with Mitchell and Miki for the Back Alley Antics. We created and rehearsed almost every day all through July and August.

Last night we had our dress rehearsal for the final, full length version of the show, which opens on Friday, August 26 at Dance Saskatchewan, and closes on Sunday, August 28; one year after our first working session on the theme of Contradictions.

Miki here. I'm lying in my bed with a hot thermos of tea, my cat Squirmy curled up next to me. I had insomnia again last night, awake at 4am thinking about the lighting for Contradictions. Finally, in between dozing, I went through the whole show in my mind, paying special attention to breaking down and visualizing the moves I have difficulty with. I'm a little anxious; that along with the especially strenuous rehearsals, both physically and emotionally, have left me with a sore, slightly inflamed shin, which I'm icing.

Yesterday was our "day off", so I worked all day on the lighting and audio. Karla and I touched base to review some new choreography, and share some mutual support; we were both feeling emotional. I took a break and met Mitchell to load some stuff into the van, and had another outing in the evening with Mitchell and Karla for an interview on CFCR Rainbow Radio with Jack Saddleback, which was fun!

Today is going to be a big day; but I think I'm organized. I'll be picking up the lighting gear in a couple of hours, and setting up our stage and gear for the first time at Dance Saskatchewan, focusing lights and setting cues, and we'll be holding our first technical "stumble through" this evening with our technician. We open in 4 days! I hope those who can are planning to come see the results of our year of hard work, soul searching and creation!
