Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan A summer Shakespeare theatre company in Saskatoon that produces great contemporary plays of the Bard

A not-for-profit, registered charity incorporated in 1985, Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan Festival Inc. continues to provide exciting contemporary and traditional productions of plays by Shakespeare and his contemporaries. Located along the Meewasin Trail, our newly renovated site is not only home to our productions each summer, but also a great place to take in the beautiful views, wildlife, and community spirit that YXE has to offer!

Looking back on a great week of celebrating Volunteer Appreciation Week, we were so glad to join the Saskatoon Open Door Society, our incredible SOTS volunteers, and fellow community organizations for a joyful wrap-up event.

From our ever-popular Shakespeare-themed photo booth (costumes and all!) to a dance party that brought everyone together, it was a celebration full of energy, creativity, and connection.

To all volunteers: thank you. You are at the heart of everything we do, and we are grateful for you every single day!

William Shakespeare's birthday, widely celebrated on April 23, is a time of excitement and anticipation for Shakespeare on the Saskatchewanโ€”for the season to come, the memories to be made, and the summer nights to share with you all on the riverbank.

While Saskatoon continues its annual debate with winter, and as we dig ourselves out of another late-season storm, it feels like the right moment to pause, reflect, and share the story of our 40th anniversary year.

SOTS at 40: Fools & Kings was a season shaped by creativity, resilience, and extraordinary community support. From A Midsummer Nightโ€™s Dream: 1985 to The Tragedy of Richard II, it was a year that honoured our past while reminding us whatโ€™s possible when a community comes together.

Many will remember that just one year ago, the 2025 season was uncertain. Thanks to Ellen Remaiโ€™s generous matching campaign through the Frank & Ellen Remai Foundation and more than 600 donors who stepped forward, we built a season that will be remembered for years to come.

Today, we are proud to share our ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿฑ ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—–๐—ผ๐—บ๐—บ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ถ๐˜๐˜†, a reflection on the milestones, artistic achievements, and impact made possible by all of you.

Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan (SOTS) has been providing world-class theatre on the riverbanks of the South Saskatchewan for over four decades. From the very beginning, it was our earliest volunteers who helped raise that first tent. Since then, SOTS has been supported by thousands of helping hands each summer and throughout the year. With more than 3,000 volunteer hours given last year alone, we are deeply grateful for the passion and care our incredible volunteer community brings.

For National Volunteer Week, SOTS is proud to partner with other outstanding Saskatoon organizations to celebrate the dedicated volunteers who strengthen our city.

To our volunteers: we look forward to celebrating you this weekend. Thank you!

Wednesday night, Skye Brandon (Artistic Director) and Alyson Cook (Marketing & Communications coordinator) had the pleasure of joining the wonderfully thoughtful Literature Matters series in a conversation facilitated by Dr. Brent Nelson of the USask English Department at the Grace-Westminster United Church.

In a room filled with curiosity, conversation, and the quiet spark of ideas becoming something more, we shared stories of Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan: our upcoming season, our artistic visions, and the ever-evolving magic of bringing theatre to the riverbank. It was a joy to speak about where weโ€™re headed and to feel the excitement ripple through such an engaged and generous audience.

A heartfelt thank you to USask English Department for the warm invitation and for cultivating a space where literature and performance meet, mingle, and come alive. We left feeling inspired, grateful, and just a little more eager for whatโ€™s to come.
