Each individual strips of coloured paper is manipulated, shaped and combined together to create beautiful 3D pieces. Paper Quilling is a 15 century old technique where artists manipulated strips of coloured paper to design works of art. These techniques have evolved and expanded over the last century in many different directions. Sandy fell in love with quilling after being introduced to the art f

orm by a good friend. Combining her enthusiasm for quilling along with her design background she established Heart & Soul Quilling. Sandy has created many different quilling pieces, but focused this past year on designing detailed Heart shapes. Having had such a positive feedback she has decided to share these designs locally. Family and friends who have been separated during COVID have been finding different ways to reach out and connect ...showing their support, appreciation and love for each other. The Heart is a significant symbol and shape. The Heart shape is recognized the world over as a symbol of love and affection, but it's symbolic meaning also includes compassion, unity, joy, gratitude, appreciation, truth and hope. All of these things we need now more than ever in our world. Quilled Hearts make an ideal gift allowing you to express and acknowlege the importance of someone in your life or in memory of someone special that has been lost. Quilled Hearts also celebrate a significant event, achievement or special occasion. Sandy puts her heart and soul into each piece. A great amount of patience, precision and hours are required to complete these pieces. Quilling hearts have been designed to allow for some customization.

A very good friend retired this past Dec. after a long successful career as a practising pharmacist and prof at the college of pharmacy. She asked me to create a number of quilling pieces she could give as parting gifts to colleagues at the college.

Celebrating Heritage -
I wanted to share my most recent quilled piece with you.
This framed piece was created for a very special family close to my heart. Their family is originally from the Ukraine and still have family and friends there. We will soon mark one year since the war broke out in Ukraine.

I created this piece to celebrate Ukraine and Ukrainian culture. A tribute to Ukraine and their people's strength, determination and resilience at an unbearable time.

Three important symbols have been incorporated

Trident - The trident is at the center of the piece. It is typically seen on their coat of arms representing heroic events from the past - those who fought for Ukraine's independence 100 years ago protecting sovereignty and territorial integrity. This symbol still strongly speak to the present.

Wheat - Wheat is a staple crop of the Ukraine and symbolizes hopes for good harvest and good health.

Embroidery - is an ancient & symbolic tradition in Ukraine and considered an art form in itself. Red & black are the most commonly used colours in embroidery patterns. Red considered to represent luck, joy & love. You will see in the background of the piece a pattern inked in red.

One of the most popular quilled designs last year. 1/8" quilling strips have been used to create the fine detail of the body and wings. This angel would be a lovely additon to any Christmas tree. This angel has also been gifted in memory of a special person or loved one.
