So much can change within a year 🥹These last few months we’ve been doing some serious thinking about our art gallery space. With both of us working full-time during the week to support the gallery, and knowing we need to focus on raising Sunny and our self-care, we’ve made the difficult decision to end our art gallery space and transition into more of an online gallery with pop-up shows & artist studio visits after January!

We have really loved running this space, curating shows, putting on events, and supporting & connecting with artists and this decision hasn’t been easy, but we know it’s for the best right now. The work/life balance has been tough and it is no longer sustainable for us to maintain the physical gallery. We’ll still be around, just doing what we do in a different way! 😊

We started fine-tuning the idea of The Drop Spot and preparing the space at the beginning of 2023, and we gave ourselves a year to see how things would go. Initially, we thought the gallery would bring us more family time and freedom in our schedules, but it hasn’t worked out that way, and that is okay! We’re very proud of what we achieved this last year 🥹💛

We’ve worked with over 70 SK based artists, put on 2 rooftop concerts, 1 big art/comedy/music event, and over 10 artist talk events! We’ve curated 6 exhibitions and displayed 15 drop wall projects, finding new homes for over 100 works of art! It has been so rewarding to see people engage with the art and fall in love with new art and artists. We’ve proven to ourselves that we can run a cool art gallery and although things are shifting, we do hope to open a physical gallery again someday. Thank you so much to everyone who has supported our gallery and to the artists who have shared their art with us.

The current Body shows ends on Sunday January 7 and then our final exhibition will be a 1 week exhibition with oil painter Isaac Hudson from Jan 12-19. ☺️

We’re sad to be leaving the building, it was like a second home this past year. We hope you can drop in over the next few weeks to celebrate all the art and check out our beautiful space one last time 💛💛💛

💕Join us in the gallery this Sunday Dec 10 from 3-4PM for a special book launch & reading by poets Lori Ulrich and Belinda Betker! Limited to 10 spots, email or DM asap us to reserve a spot 😊 Lori is celebrating the release of her debut poetry collection Turning the Corner, and Belinda is reading from the revised edition of her acclaimed debut poetry collection Phases.

The event will start at 3PM with a conversation between Gregory, Belinda, and Lori followed by readings by both poets! Copies of each book will be available to purchase and there will be time at the end to chat with the poets and get them to sign your books 😊 Learn more about the two poetry collections below:

Turning the Corner by Lori Ulrich: Turning the Corner tells the story of a life that persists, encompassing all the empty space around us. Life that pervades death, through the survivors of those who’ve passed on. In Lori Ulrich’s debut poetry collection, she weaves a story of not only turning the corner, but the pain involved in arriving there. In the crimson day of the impossible, her son’s life became immortal, and his spirit transcends this collection. A deeply empathetic exploration of the long path of illness, passing, and survival where Lori’s words will take your hand, turning the corner with you.

Phases by Belinda Betker: In this new revised, expanded edition of her acclaimed debut poetry collection, Phases, Belinda Betker deftly captures what it’s like for those who don’t fit within rigid notions of what it means to be a “boy” or a “girl”. She takes readers on a luminous journey of a young girl’s coming-of-age, her burgeoning sexuality, an unhappy marriage, the triumphant release of coming out, and the liberating power of drag. Thirty-one new poems have been added to the first edition which was a 2020 finalist for two Saskatchewan Book Awards.

In these poems, readers will find a celestial and transcendent rediscovering of the self; an unravelling of society’s expectations of gender, love, and desire, and how these falsehoods threaten to eclipse out truth. Phases is mercurial and unpredictable, a celebration of the non-conformist in each of us.

Artist bio: Harley Sinclair is an Indigenous artist, hailing from Regina and registered as a member of the Peepeekisis Cree Nation in the File Hills region of Treaty 4. Born in Lethbridge, Alberta in 1988 and raised in southern Saskatchewan, Harley’s artistic inspiration is drawn from the vast prairie landscapes, living skies, and turbulent life experiences that have shaped his worldview. Growing up in Regina in the 1990s as a child of the foster care system, Harley’s early years were marked by adversity and isolation. Despite these challenges, with the support of his peers and foster family, he was able to nurture and develop his natural artistic talent. His work is a testament to the power of perseverance and the resilience of the human spirit.

His pieces are characterized by their emotional depth and ability to provoke introspection and reflection. They challenge the status quo and invite viewers to experience the cultural richness and diversity of the Indigenous experience.
