Living Digital Art: Free Youth Workshop Series

SSNAP is pleased to present Living Digital Art, a free two-part workshop series for youth led by digital artist Leo Chan.

Taking place over two evenings, this hands-on program invites participants to explore the computer as a creative tool. Working from Chan’s practice in digital sculpture and 3D scanning, attendees will learn how to capture a physical object and transform it into a living, interactive digital artwork.

The workshop encourages experimentation and introduces new ways of thinking about the relationship between physical and digital forms.

No prior experience is required, just curiosity and an interest in art and technology.

Artist Spotlight: Kuhlein Miguemigue

SSNAP 2025/26 Residency Award recipient Kuhlein Migue reflects on her upcoming residency and the role of memory, place, and process in her work.

Drawing from her experience growing up in the Philippines, her paintings reconstruct landscapes through memory, filtered, reimagined, and shaped by lived experience. Working with oil paint and handmade paper, she explores themes of land, labour, and history, often referencing colonial imagery while pushing toward more abstract forms.

With her first residency ahead on Salt Spring Island, Kuhlein looks forward to new connections, new ideas, and the space to experiment and take creative risks.

“Take good photos of your work, be confident about your submission, and don’t overthink it.”

Opening tomorrow in Vancouver

SSNAP artist Bettina Matzkuhn presents ‘Maps, Memories, Reflections’

An exhibition exploring the relationship between memory, emotion, and place through intricately embroidered works. Drawing on cartography as both method and metaphor, Matzkuhn’s work challenges the idea of maps as objective records, instead reflecting how memory is shaped by feeling—distorted, selective, and deeply personal.

SSNAP Education: Living Beading with Natalie Rollins

Earlier this month, SSNAP’s Education Program welcomed Natalie Rollins to Salt Spring Elementary for an artist talk and beading workshop with a Grade 4/5 class.

An interdisciplinary artist and member of the Driftpile Cree Nation (Treaty 8), Natalie shared the cultural roots of her practice, including the influence of her Kokum’s beadwork and the role of family tradition in her work.

Students were introduced to flatstitch beadwork and explored materials before creating their own pieces.

“Each bead is like a person — together it creates an impact.”

The workshop closed with a sharing circle reflecting on the process. Natalie Rollins exhibited Sowing Seeds in the SSNAP 2025 exhibition.

Supported in part by a Youth Grant from the Salt Spring Island Foundation.
