Remembering Judy Weeden
1932-2026

The Salt Spring Arts Council is deeply saddened by the loss of Judy Weeden, a well-known island ceramicist and an incredible community member.

Judy Weeden worked in ceramics for over 50 years, in addition to enjoying an academic career in biological research and teaching at the University of Alaska. It was during her field work that she discovered the materials that constitute the ceramist’s palette. Her highly acclaimed work was often decorative or sculptural, with a functional component. Her signature pieces featured finishing techniques that enhanced the natural clay.

Following their university careers in Alaska, Judy and her husband Bob Weeden retired to Salt Spring in 1990. They bought a 17-acre former farm and converted an old pig barn on the property to become Judy’s pottery studio. She built a wide and appreciative following for her superbly formed and decorated pots, becoming one of western Canada’s best known ceramic artists.

A staunch community arts supporter, Judy was part of many arts council events and exhibitions, including the 2022 Spring Art Show. She participated in the Artcraft Gallery past her 90th year. Judy was slowed by failing eyesight in her latter years but did not completely retire from her art practice until closing her studio not long before her passing.

Judy’s sense of humour, compassion and adventurous spirit made her a much-cherished member of the local arts community. We extend our deepest condolences to her family and all who knew and loved her.

Any previously accepted artists working in clothing, textiles and fibre arts will also need to be rejuried this year, according to our five-year rotation schedule.

Artcraft Winter is open only until December 24!🎄

Today we are featuring the hand crafted jewellery of Álvaro Sánchez.

Born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Álvaro studied design, music, and architecture before living throughout Latin America. He settled on Salt Spring Island in 1990, bringing with him a rich mix of cultural influences that continue to shape his work.

As a self taught silversmith, Álvaro creates hand made jewellery with an urban Latin flavour. Using precious metals and natural gems, each piece is thoughtfully designed to be durable, comfortable, and beautiful to wear.

Visit Artcraft Winter and discover this exceptional hand crafted jewellery before we close for the season on December 24.🎄
