The theme for the Rising Tide Festival Molly Kool AiR Exhibit was Stories of Place. This painting story is about a Black Hole - Swimming with Salmon, Upper Salmon River. This two-panel painting by K. Shaun Chown, Visual Artist, came from memory and was inspired by a visit to the Black Hole in Fundy National Park in 2018. Shaun and her husband experienced the delicate start of an ecosystem in recovery by directly observing the salmon returning to the river. They observed the young salmon, Parr, that were born in the river the previous year. The Parr's job is to follow the adult males and females on their return to their spawning grounds and fertilize the reds after the adult male and females have laid their eggs. In the first panel, Shaun is shown in a bright yellow drysuit, watching the Parr swimming among some young salmon in the upper end of the Black Hole. In the second panel, two larger silvery salmon are returning from the Bay of Fundy. They have grown in the rich waters of the Bay, where the huge tides at the mouth of the Bay cause large upwellings, full of nutrients and food upon which they feed. These two salmon have been away from their spawning river for 1-2 years and have grown large. On that day, we floated over a pool of very large salmon with tags. A pair of Merganser ducks arrived, and I felt fear for the little Parr.
