The Laboratory:
The Laboratory is a new initiative by Twitches & Itches Theatre, created to offer St. Catharines theatre artists an outlet for intrinsic, open-ended creation. It is been formed with support from the Essential Collective Theatre in connection to their new Flexspace studio. The Laboratory offers a weekly group session for artists to engage in creation-based processes rooted in physic
al and vocal exploration. Specifics:
Spanning from September 6, 2014-April 27 2015, The Laboratory will take place every Sunday from 9:30AM-12:30 PM. All sessions will be conducted in the Essential Collective Theatre’s new Flexspace, located upstairs at the Sullivan Mahoney Courthouse Theatre at 101 King Street. Process-Centred Values:
The Laboratory is intended as a safe place for St. Catharines theatre artists to develop creation-based skills and material on a purely intrinsic basis. Participation will be free of charge, so that work can take place in its own time with no external pressures. At the end of the April there will be a showing for an invited audience in which participants can present materials of their choosing should that choosing happen to take place. Created work can be geared towards future productions by Twitches & Itches Theatre, or participants can take their work towards projects of their own device. Material:
Focusing on the performer as a creator, material will heavily emphasize group singing and moving. Participants will engage in structured modes of exploration, including song creation, soundscape, and physical, improv-based scene composition. Sessions will be guided, but gently.
