The Huntsman Marine Science Centre is a private not-for-profit charity, registered in Canada in 1969, with a mission to inspire ocean stewardship through educational experiences and advance collaborative marine research. As a private institution, Huntsman relies on the contributions of donors and its own activities (e.g., entry fees to the Fundy Discovery Aquarium and research contracts) to operat

e and maintain our infrastructure in the absence of core funding from any level of government. The Huntsman is grateful to donors – including alumni, students, staff, and friends – whose philanthropic support has built critical infrastructure, enhanced education and research opportunities, and left a legacy of ocean stewardship for the next generation.

Monday, June 8, 2026: Taking on Water
Price: $27 (+fees & HST)
Doors open at 6:30 pm, show starts at 7:30 pm

Performed by: Robert Chafe, Louise Moyes, Duo Concertante, Nancy Dahn & Timothy Steeves
Music written by: Randolph Peters

'Taking on Water' is a musical play: a work of words, music and movement telling spellbinding stories about climate, starting from the perspective of small coastal communities around Newfoundland and Labrador.

Award-winning actor and playwright Robert Chafe interviewed residents of these communities about the challenges and rewards of living near and making a living from a changing ocean. Chafe then chose a magic realist style to create stories which highlight the current environmental tensions we all experience, to create universally compelling images of: "…the town swallowed by a monster, the city buried by a storm. The village built on blue glass. And a place that just simply vanished. . ."

These stories are told & performed by Robert and St. John's-based dancer and storyteller Louise Moyes, with music performed by Duo Concertante, written for them by acclaimed Winnipeg composer Randolph Peters. All the creators & performers worked together to create an imaginative, yes sometimes funny, always powerful and evocative theatrical and musical journey.
