Self-care is very important. As women we put other people’s needs ahead of our own- family, work, friends etc. For me, self care sometimes means taking a break and having a cup of masaala chai. What is your self care tip?

When did Ladies College begin operations? On August 17, 1854 a branch for women was opened. Initially a part of Wesleyan Academy, the Ladies College was established in the White Hall. The enrolment rose quickly making the facility very crowded. Hence, a north wing was added.

When is it time to rest? When everything on the the to do list is checked off? That might be hard to accomplish. I always have more things on my list than I have time for. My today’s work was to complete this painting, which I will be taking to Riverview Art Council tomorrow for their 50th anniversary show.

When was Mount Allison founded? The corner stone for the Wesleyan Academy for boys was laid in 1840. The academy began operations in 1843. Charles Frederick Allison's conversion to Methodism impacted him deeply. This was one of the reasons for establishing an academy for girls.

Failure and setbacks are a normal part of life. I have experienced many setbacks in life. One of the recent ones was taking part in a speed painting competition. We were required to paint something on 18”x24” canvas in 20 minutes. No reference photos were allowed. You see the painting I did in 20 minutes I think I did pretty well. However I didn’t get chosen to take part in the finals’ round. Needless to say that I was disappointed. After some reflection and soul searching I realized that the biggest benefit was in the journey to get there. I improved my painting skills, gained self-confidence. The journey is more important than the outcome!

Where have the years gone!! A reflection on my life. Coming to Canada as a newly wed called for a lot of adjustment. The learning curve was steep. However, looking back, it has been an amazing journey of raising a loving and caring family, of building a life surrounded by supportive colleagues, friends, and community members. Thank you Canada! 🇨🇦 Thank you to my family, friends, colleagues, and community members. This would not have happened without your support!

Change is difficult, though it is the law of Nature. Nothing stays the same. Two of the most difficult changes in my life were getting married in India, leaving my family and friends behind, moving to Canada and adjusting to a totally different lifestyle in a new country. The second biggest change came when my children left home. Being an empty nester wasn’t easy. I missed the children but I knew that they have to leave in order to build a future for themselves. What have been the biggest changes in your life?

Stop comparing yourself with others. As a human being you are unique. Instead of comparing be true to yourself. Express who you are in your own unique style. This is a hard lesson to learn. Certainly was for me. Initially I would try to copy other artists’ techniques and create work like theirs. But then I realized that this isn’t me, nor is it my style. Thanks to my ceramics professional-her words keep coming back as a reminder. Do something original instead of copying others. During my fourth year of ceramics I created a series of flying geese. This wasn’t an easy project. I spent weeks perfecting the technique for making feathers, getting the correct body shape etc. Then came the day of evaluation. My professor said that technically my work was superior, but it lacked originality. I had merely copied what already exists in Nature. Those words keep coming back as a reminder whenever I compare myself with other artists. I learned that in order to create my most authentic work, I need to create what moves me and expresses who I am. An important lesson learned!

Available now for purchase. I strongly believe in the statement of R.W. Emerson that “What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us”. This is the theme of the painting entitled, “Sky is the Limit!”. When we have courage and determination, sky i...

A Dream Realized! As a woman my first priority is to look after my family, my husband and my children. I put their needs ahead of mine. I worked as a teacher and teacher leader to ensure that we had enough money to put our children through university and professional schools. As a parent my biggest happiness is that by Gods grace both my children are doing well. I did my visual arts degree after retiring from a 37 year long career in education. During the time I studied visual arts I visited many places where I saw impressive public art installations. I dreamed that someday one of my pieces might be displayed in a public space. I never thought that as an emerging artist I would be able to do it. I have always had the strong belief that right people come into my life at the right time. Sure enough, Tantramar Heritage Trust, Mount Allison University, McKenzie College, my mentors, a huge number of individuals, my web designer, friends, my family, the Town of Sackville, and Canada Council for the Arts supported me. Thus, my dream of creating a piece of public art was realized. I have lived in Sackville for over five decades. This town has supported me, nurtured me and my family for all these years. I wanted to give back by creating a piece of public art that would be meaningful for the people of this town. I have portrayed some snippets of the history of Sackville on 150 ceramic tiles. I’m incredibly grateful to all the individuals and organizations that supported me in the creation of this piece of public art.
