The Colander Gals

The Colander Gals The Colander Gals, a play with music, premiered at the 2012 Edmonton International Fringe Festival and is currently available for bookings.

To contact us, send us a message via facebook or email [email protected] What do vegetable hats, ditty-bags and Emily Murphy have in common? Find out with the fictional Tamarack branch of the AWI as they present a musical variety fundraiser. Set in the 1950s, you'll hear past musical favourites and share in the challenges, laughs and sisterhood of four of the members. To book The Colander

Gals show, or to learn more about how we can adapt the show length to suit your needs, send us a facebook message or e-mail [email protected]. A "music only" version of the program is also possible—especially good for fundraisers or as part of larger functions! The Colander Gals uses the Alberta Women’s Institute (AWI) organization as a vehicle for telling the fictional story of four rural women from central Alberta. The women come together as acquaintances and neighbours to put on the musical variety show as a fundraiser for the Tamarack Emergency Relief Fund. Through the course of the play (and its accompanying songs), we get snapshots of the lives of these women and the events, both humorous and poignant, which transform them into dear friends. Inspired by the women of the AWI, the organization’s rich history of women coming together to support each other was an ideal fit for this story. The Colander Gals hopes to pay joyful homage to the hardworking women who helped build our province. Join The Colander Gals as they try their hand at amateur hypnosis; venture on a backcountry car ride (along with bumps, baby bottles and a little steam heat); try to rid Alberta of its crop-eating pests; and attempt to solve the world’s problems with oodles of strudel.

The Colander Gals are sending condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Marion Brown. We know Marion will be deeply missed by all of those whose lives she touched. Marion was such an active member of her community and support to those around here. She will continue to be an important part of Alberta's history in many aspects, but for us, especially her work with the Alberta Women's Institute. We learned so much from you Marion. Thank you.

For those of you in the Edmonton area, check out the SkirtsAfire festival happening this weekend (Thurs - Sun). It's a brand new multidiscipline arts festival celebrating women's voices. Click on the link below to visit the SkirtsAfire website and learn more about the festival and see the full schedule. The Colander Gals are pleased that so many of our friends are involved with this important new festival.

"SkirtsAfire is a festival that empowers, celebrates, develops, supports and showcases women in theatre and other art forms. It will create a platform for Canadian women’s stories and the female voice – women writing, directing, designing, choreographing, painting and putting music to their own stories."
