Did you know, what you’re watching in the arena isn’t all judged the same way?and that’s part of what makes rodeo so interesting.
In pro rodeo, you’ll see two main types of events in the arena: scored events and timed events, each bringing its own kind of excitement.
Scored events include ba****ck riding, saddle bronc riding, and bull riding. In these events, both the rider and the animal are judged, with a total score out of 100, up to 50 points for the rider and 50 for the animal. Judges look for control, rhythm, and how well the rider matches the movement of the animal, making it as much about style and technique as it is about staying on for the full ride. Failure to stay on for the full 8 seconds results in a no score.
Timed events, on the other hand, are all about speed and precision. Barrel racing, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, team roping, and breakaway roping are won by the fastest clean run. Competitors are racing the clock, where smooth ex*****on is key. Breaking the barrier can add time penalties, and missing a catch can result in a no time.
Understanding the difference adds a lot to what you’re seeing, whether you’re watching for a score or racing the clock.
