Diamond Sun Observatory

Diamond Sun Observatory A place to explore the universe visually and especially through astrophotography. It offers a view not only on exotic places far away, but also back in time.

Vast as it is, much of the universe is observable from the little dust mote we call Earth. Diamond Sun Observatory is one of many little hideouts dedicated to getting a better glimpse of the wonders that populate our universe. A place where ordinary people can get a sense of scale of the structures within in it - planets, comets, stars, star clusters, nebulae and galaxies. The sheer size of our un

iverse puts these structures at such extraordinary distances from one another that most celestial objects, even gargantuan ones, are typically too dim for the human eye. Diamond Sun Observatory is equipped with numerous telescopes, cameras and computerized controls to capture light from extremely distant objects that has been traveling toward us for as long as a billion years. It is a place to inform and stir the imagination and develop a deep appreciation for science and nature, and for the spectacularly unique place that hosts all life as we know it.

What a spectacular total solar eclipse!
Looked like a total bust, but the clouds cleared for just a few minutes right in the middle of totality.
The view through the telescope was brief, but just breathtaking. A huge solar flair made us gasp at the eyepiece.
And then it was all over much too fast.
Hope everyone has as much fun today as we did.

It's been a while since I've played on the moon!
Here are 16 frames composited together.
Too bad my laptop battery died before I could get more shots.

The story behind the name. I bought my observatory from a gentleman named Wayne Parker. Mr. Parker is the bassist from the well known Canadian 80's rock band Glass Tiger. One of Glass Tiger's greatest hits is a song titled "Diamond Sun". Astronomers commonly refer to Deep Space Objects as "DSO's". Most observatories have a name, so when I started thinking about what to call mine, I asked Wayne if anyone buying his observatories had named them "DSO - Diamond Sun Observatory". He was quite tickled by the question and replied that, surprisingly, no one had. So this is my tribute to Glass Tiger, and my personal astronomical observatory that abbreviates to a well known astronomical term.

Celestial objects far beyond our solar system. Some, like nebulae, are within our Milky Way Galaxy. Others - galaxies - are much farther from home.
