What is Baybayin script? 🇵🇭✨
Baybayin is an ancient pre-colonial writing system from the Philippines. It’s a syllabic script — meaning each symbol represents a syllable rather than individual letters. It was traditionally used across different Filipino languages long before the modern alphabet was introduced.
Today, Baybayin is being reintroduced in new ways, especially through art and tattooing, as a way to reconnect with cultural identity and language.
In tattoo form, it can be done in a clean fine line style for a subtle, modern look, or in brush stroke / calligraphy-inspired styles that feel more expressive and traditional. There are also many placement possibilities depending on how visible or personal you want the piece to be. From small and minimal to bold statement placements.
Each design is usually created by translating a word into Tagalog (or another Filipino language), then breaking it down into syllables and converting it into Baybayin characters.
