🌟 Don’t miss your chance to see i digress and SIDE CORE: under city—on view for just two more weeks. Plan your visit today!

📍Representing a wide range of perspectives, i digress presents artists who engage with both lived experiences and collective histories in their art practices. Some artists embrace an autobiographical or confessional vein, drawing from memoirs, diaries, and photo-albums, while others mine existing archives and ephemera found in the public realm, employing a more documentary approach.

📍Richmond Art Gallery presents the first North American exhibition of Japanese artist collective SIDE CORE. Known for site-specific projects that blur the boundaries between contemporary art, skate culture, and urban infrastructure, the Tokyo-based collective presents a selection of video works and photographs that explore the often-overlooked spaces of the city—from highways and railroads to drainage tunnels and underground waterways.

Curious about how the exhibition SIDE CORE: under city came to Richmond? Exhibition Curator and Gallery Director Shaun Dacey lets us in behind his selection for the Spring exhibitions.

“I was by the visuals, the exploration of subterranean Tokyo, skateboards and these characters in hazmat suits with lights attached to them, it was otherworldly and very cinematic, and kind of really drew me in.”

There are only a few weeks left to experience SIDE CORE: under city. Visit us before the exhibition closes on July 5!

Featuring the work of SIDE CORE.

✂️ Look at all those creative minds at work! Thank you to all of those who attended this month's collage club!

Inspired by the "I digress" exhibition, we challenged participants to get personal — remixing their own story with memories and pop culture! Using found images or anything that speaks to them, participants explored how their memoirs could come alive through collage.

🌟 Join our Collage Club for Adults—a relaxed, social evening dedicated to art-making in a welcoming environment. July's month’s prompt is UNDERGROUND, inspired by the SIDE CORE: Under City exhibition. Registration is now open.

This spring, our exhibitions reach beyond the gallery walls. As you make your way along Minoru Boulevard, be sure to look up, and also take a closer look inside.

Displayed on the exterior wall of our building is “State of Mind” (2026), a banner by Jo-Anne Balcaen that captures the artist’s stream of consciousness on PVC. Balcaen shares her personal, spontaneous thoughts in a fluid and uncensored style for all to see.

Just a few steps away, a video installation is visible through the Gallery’s glass wall. SIDE CORE’s “Above the under city” (2026) features a live stream of Tokyo’s Shibuya Crossing—the world’s busiest pedestrian intersection, where 250,000 to 500,000 people cross daily, more than Richmond’s entire population of 200,000. One scene from SIDE CORE’s “under city,” also on view in the Gallery, was filmed in a covered river directly beneath Shibuya Crossing.

💖 Thank you to all of those who attended Lulu Series: Rode Work/Under City!

Attendees learned about Japanese artist collective SIDE CORE's new work "rode work ver. under city" and their site-specific public projects that blur the boundaries between contemporary art, skate culture and urban infrastructure.

✨ SIDE CORE also discussed their multi-channel video installation rode work ver. under city, which was created in collaboration with renowned skate film crew, Far East Skate Network. The piece captures skaters navigating Tokyo’s subterranean environments — including stormwater basins, disused transit tunnels and maintenance corridors. These movements transform utilitarian spaces into expressive terrains, linking isolated structures into a speculative, virtual undercity.
