Curated by Lillian O’Brien Davis and now on view at the MacKenzie Art Gallery Orientation Gallery: Marigold Santos, shroud envisage (datura and carabao grass) (2024).

Drawing on Filipino folklore, Santos reimagines the shape-shifting asuang as a powerful metaphor for the experience of migration and living between cultures. In this work, a hybrid figure emerges against a transitional sky, wearing a traditional salakot made of carabao grass while datura flowers bloom from its hands. Through rich colour and mythological imagery, Santos explores the fragmented and multiple identities that can arise from navigating life between Canada and the Philippines.

About the artist:
Marigold Santos was born in Manila, Philippines, and immigrated with her family to Scarborough, Ontario, Canada in 1988. She holds a BFA from the University of Calgary, and an MFA from Concordia University, Montreal. Santos’ interdisciplinary practice includes painting, drawing, sculpture, and tattoo work.

✨ This work is on view at the Orientation Gallery until 2 August, 2026.

Congratulations to Audie Murray on being shortlisted for the National Gallery of Canada’s 2026 Sobey Art Award, representing the Prairies region!

Based in Regina, Audie is a Métis and Cree artist from Flying Dust First Nation whose multidisciplinary practice explores ancestral knowledge, memory, and contemporary Indigenous life.

Audie’s work has been part of the MacKenzie Art Gallery’s exhibitions for many years, beginning with the University of Regina’s BFA Graduating Exhibition in 2017 and continuing through exhibitions such as “Indian Theater” and “Radical Stitch.” Most recently, we had the pleasure of working with Audie and witnessing the depth and impact of her artistic practice firsthand during her solo exhibition, “Audie Murray: To Make Smoke.”

It has been a privilege to follow the evolution of her practice and see her continued contributions to contemporary Indigenous art.

We are so excited to see her work recognized on this national stage and join the many people celebrating this incredible achievement.
❤️ Congratulations, Audie, we’re cheering you on! .fii_
