Public Lecture: Say what? Will carbon pricing really cause a catastrophic recession in Saskatchewan?

In June 2018, the government of Saskatchewan issued a press release on how the federal carbon tax would affect Saskatchewan’s economy. They indicated the tax would put Saskatchewan in a catastrophic recession from 2022 until 2030, and claimed their finding is supported by research done by the Institute for Energy, Environment and Sustainable Communities (IEESC) group at the University of Regina. But does the research conducted at the IEESC support this extraordinary finding? We took a close look at Saskatchewan’s analysis, and the numbers simply don’t add up. Our best guess is that Saskatchewan’s own modeling suggests that the impacts of a carbon tax have been overstated by multiple orders of magnitude.
