🎬 Paris is Burning (1991)
Free Admission | Friday June 12 - 7:00 PM CST | USA | 1990 | 78 min | 14A | Directed by Jennie Livingston.

This documentary focuses on drag queens living in New York City and their "house" culture, which provides a sense of community and support for the flamboyant and often socially shunned performers.

Where does voguing come from, and what, exactly, is throwing shade? This landmark documentary provides a vibrant snapshot of the 1980s through the eyes of New York City’s African American and Latinx Harlem drag-ball scene. Made over seven years, PARIS IS BURNING offers an intimate portrait of rival fashion “houses,” from fierce contests for trophies to house mothers offering sustenance in a world rampant with homophobia, transphobia, racism, AIDS, and poverty. Featuring legendary voguers, drag queens, and trans women — including Willi Ninja, Pepper LaBeija, Dorian Corey, and Venus Xtravaganza.

Come early for a free drop-in workshop from 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM, Intro to Vogue Femme, lead by Laura from Vibes YQR!!

Co-introduced on-screen by director John Kozak and Adjust Tracking host, Jon Vaughn.

The film was sourced from a preview copy on VHS made by director John Kozak himself, which was originally given to Dave Barber (RIP), previous director of Winnipeg's Cinematheque. This tape was in turn was given to the subsequent director, Jaimz Asmundson (also RIP) and finally given by Jaimz to myself, Jon Vaughn, in person at the Cinematheque during the summer of 2022 with the incentive of it being a 'must-see' ;).

John Kozak has worked in the film industry in Winnipeg for thirty years in a variety of capacities, but mainly as a writer, director and editor. He has written and directed over twenty films in a wide range of styles, including experimental films, educational films and two dramatic features, including Hell Bent in 1994.

The film contains violence and is suitable for ages 18+.
