🤑"Art$ Funding" at the Art Gallery of Regina is a playful yet piercing exhibition that exposes the real-world frustrations, emotional toll, and hidden labor behind the pursuit of arts funding in Canada. Through satirical, witty, and thought-provoking works, artists and collectives lay bare the bureaucratic hoops, elusive dollars, and misunderstood value of creative work, inviting visitors to see that art is far from a frivolous pastime.
The exhibition features a diverse range of works, including Silton, Saskatchewan-based artist Christopher Campbell Gardiner, who transforms failed grant applications and other unseen administrative and emotional artifacts into art by sealing them in intricate embroidery and layers of paint. Gardiner’s process is both an act of healing and a powerful statement about the struggles artists face behind the scenes. Interactive installations invite visitors to enter the fray themselves: Glen Johnson’s Artistic Licence Bureau offers a tongue-in-cheek exploration of artistic validation and identity, while Patrick Blenkarn and Milton Lim’s high-stakes card game, culturecapital, set in a pulsating environment of lights and sound, lets gallery-goers experience the luck, chance, and strategy involved in arts funding.
Art$ Funding also raises timely questions about the future of impartial, arms-length arts support in Canada. As governments increasingly underfund arts councils and boards, the exhibition champions the need to protect these essential structures to ensure freedom of expression and support for challenging art.
