Who/what inspires you?

Oh my! Honestly, if I say everything, it’d be vague and if I list it all, it’d take me a while. Even the most random things or situation that I find myself in, would push a button in me to create something. I keep a pen and paper by my bedside to write down words or random thoughts that’d popped in my brain, in the middle of the night. Though what inspires me the most are people that matters to me: family and friends. I think it’s because of how I’ve been brought up—grounded and family oriented. Some of my works emerged from confrontation about gender that brought out the angst in me. While I’ve had some letterpress that are plain sarcasm of past experience. I navigate my feelings and try to creatively respond to certain circumstances in my life.

Good morning everyone! Our second artist feature of this week is Yvonne Niegas.

Hello everyone! My name is Yvonne, though around the studio they would call me Yeeeeeeeeeeeeevon. I’m a multidisciplinary artist working primarily on printmaking. Most of the time, I spend hours in the studio experimenting with materials and learning new ways to defy some rules of the medium. My interest in textures is evident in my work, and my prints are consisting of line drawings and mark makings. I also play around with sculpture and drawing and I love to learn new things. Woodworking is something I would like to do in the future.

Follow .werk to see more of Yvonne’s work, and stay posted for more details to come about our upcoming exhibition.

Who/what inspires you?

I’m inspired by nature, my animals, my clients, my friends, and the stories they’ve shared with me over the years. I hope that with my work I can inspire them as well.

What did you start university interested in and what are you interested in now?

I began my art practice by drawing things that I saw in cartoons and games- I used to plaster my room with drawings of Nintendo characters, Scooby Doo, Sailor Moon, Lion King etc. Through high school and university, I went down a different rout when I began painting; I was exploring deeper topics, painting more provocative content and modelling my style after surrealists like Dali and Julie Bell. In that process, I learned a lot and had great opportunities to sharpen myself up as an artist. Now in my last year of university, I’ve come full circle and have settled myself back in an illustrative mode, and have worked primarily digitally and in ink for the past year. My end goal is to do tattoos professionally and put my illustrative skill to a new kind of test.

Hello everyone! Our first artist feature of this week is Skye Mercier.

My name is Skye Mercier and I was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. I work professionally as an artist, and also work as a care provider along side school.
I’ve been drawing since I was very young and began my art practice by drawing unicorns and cartoon characters. Over the years I’ve experimented in many mediums including oil paint, acrylic, watercolour, ink, digital and charcoal, though my favourite at the moment is ink. The concepts behind most of my work have been surrounding nature, religion, power, identity and familial narratives.
