55 Years of Agribition | 1981–1990

The first decade proved Agribition could work. The next decade was about building it bigger.

The 1980s brought new facilities, new events and new ways to connect people with agriculture.

The Canada Centre opened in 1983, providing much-needed room for livestock and the growing Grain & Forage Show. Heavy horses became an increasingly significant part of Agribition, and the Commercial Cattle Barn followed in 1985.

But some of the biggest growth wasn't measured in buildings.

The first fully organized international tour arrived from the British Isles in 1985. The International Business Centre opened in 1988, creating a dedicated space for visitors from around the world to connect and talk business.

And in 1987, the Agri-Ed Showcase was created to give young people from rural and urban communities a hands-on introduction to agriculture. It would go on to welcome thousands of Saskatchewan students each year.

Of course, it wouldn't be Agribition history without a few stories that make you look twice.

Like the time two dozen eggs sold for $8,000 in 1987.

By 1990, Agribition was celebrating 20 years of “Building for the Future.”

Looking back now, that feels pretty fitting.

Connecting Canadian buyers with Canadian agriculture! 🇨🇦

New for 2026, Canadian Western Agribition is launching the Canadian Buyers Program, creating more opportunities for buyers from across the country to connect with leading livestock producers and agribusinesses.

Qualified buyers from outside Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta may be eligible for up to $1,000 in travel and accommodation reimbursement to attend this year's show!

This program strengthens connections and creates new opportunities for Canadian agriculture.
