Pow wows are traditional or competitive events, with most traditional events being held within a particular community. Competitive events have both dance and drum contests, both including various categories. Dancers are judged on their footwork, and regalia. Winners receive various awards or cash prizes!

Pow wows are either public events that permit anyone to attend including the general public, or are private events. These private events usually include particular First Nations communities, via invitation only.

Unfortunately, pow wows were not allowed in Canada (followed by the United States) via the Indian Act in 1876, but by 1914 some tribes and areas were allowed to continue cultural ceremonies. This didn't include all of Canada, although some tribes such as the Standing Buffalo Dakota Nation and Thunderchild First Nation continued to hold pow wows during the restrictive times. In 1951 these restrictions were lifted and by the 1960s a very strong era of pow wow revival occurred all across Canada.

Powwow dancers have vastly different regalia, and each piece is important to each dancer in a different way. Regalia can represent stages in a dancers life, such as achievements, or are special items bought or created by those close to the dancers. Regalia can also represent a dancer's tribe or heritage.

Happy Monday! Have an amazing week everyone, you deserve it. 😁🧡

Powwows are one of the best ways to help educate non-Indigenous peoples on our traditional ways of life and many other cultural practices Indigenous peoples have. Powwows are ceremonies or celebrations of Indigenous culture, so non-Indigenous peoples attending can learn about different dances, listen to singing and drumming, purchase crafts such as beading and more, and truly learn about Indigenous peoples traditional ceremonies and cultural practices. Powwows are one of the best ways to bring communities together ❤️
