From the very beginning, this has been a place for our community to gather, create and experience something together. And 75 years later, that legacy continues.

As we celebrate a milestone anniversary this year, we’re looking back at the people and moments that have made this stage so special — while looking ahead to the stories still to be told.

From war hall to performance hall, these seats have witnessed generations of stories, celebrations, performances and memories.

Today, the Red Deer Memorial Centre is the only 700-seat soft-seat venue for performing arts in Red Deer. While the building has seen many upgrades over the years, there’s still more work to do to ensure this iconic space can continue serving our community for generations to come.

As part of our 75th anniversary, we’re raising funds for new LED stage lighting — helping us enhance every performance and light the way forward.

A little throwback to the Memorial Centre in 1991. ❤️

A lot has changed over the years, but for 75 years, this building has remained a place for Red Deer to gather, celebrate, perform and make memories together.

And while we’re proud of its history, we’re also looking ahead to what comes next.

This anniversary year, we’re fundraising to invest in the future of the Memorial Centre, beginning with much-needed upgrades to our stage lighting. Our goal is to honour the history held within these walls while making sure this space can continue serving our community for years to come.

From drill hall to community stage. 📸

Before it was the Memorial Centre, this building served a very different purpose.

During the Second World War, it was part of Red Deer’s A-20 Army Training Camp, where the building was used as a drill hall. After the war, the community transformed the space into an auditorium and gymnasium, opening the Memorial Centre in 1951 as both a gathering place and a memorial honouring those from Red Deer and district who served and sacrificed in the First and Second World Wars.

In the 75 years since, its purpose has continued to evolve.

What began as a military drill hall became a place for concerts, theatre, graduations, community events and generations of memories. The building has changed, but it has always been a place that brings people together.

As we get ready to celebrate 75 years of the Memorial Centre this November, we’ll be digging into the archives and sharing more of the stories held within these walls.

But the archives only tell part of the story. The rest belongs to you.
