From drill hall to community stage. 📸

Before it was the Memorial Centre, this building served a very different purpose.

During the Second World War, it was part of Red Deer’s A-20 Army Training Camp, where the building was used as a drill hall. After the war, the community transformed the space into an auditorium and gymnasium, opening the Memorial Centre in 1951 as both a gathering place and a memorial honouring those from Red Deer and district who served and sacrificed in the First and Second World Wars.

In the 75 years since, its purpose has continued to evolve.

What began as a military drill hall became a place for concerts, theatre, graduations, community events and generations of memories. The building has changed, but it has always been a place that brings people together.

As we get ready to celebrate 75 years of the Memorial Centre this November, we’ll be digging into the archives and sharing more of the stories held within these walls.

But the archives only tell part of the story. The rest belongs to you.

Do you have a memory from the Memorial Centre?

We want to hear about it!

We are hiring a full-time Venue Technician plus multiple contract/on-call roster positions.

See full details on how to apply at

Red Deer Memorial Centre / Central Alberta Theatre is hiring a full-time Venue Technician to support live performances, rehearsals, and rentals (often evenings/weekends). Work includes operating house audio/lighting/basic AV, supporting load-ins/outs, maintaining safe backstage practices, and helping events run smoothly under the Operations Manager. If you’ve got live event experience (especially lighting), reliable transportation, and you’re calm under pressure, we want to hear from you.

We’re also building a roster of reliable Venue Technicians we can call on for performances, rehearsals, rentals, and event changeovers as show schedules require. This is contract, on-call work—ideal for experienced technicians who want flexible gigs without a fixed weekly schedule. (Expect a lot of evenings and weekends.)
