Week 1 boutique recap: Masshole in Quebec edition

Customer today says she’s visiting from Boston. I say « oh cool, I’m from Worcester » (nearest city to my actual hometown). She goes « I’m actually from Framingham. »

Handful of towns apart. Standing in a boutique in Quebec City together.

Told two guys yesterday that I’m from Massachusetts. They lose it laughing.

« You know how we pronounce that here? Mets tes chaussettes. »

Put your socks on.

Then a woman working the Sapphire Princess cruise ship(docked here today, headed to Boston) stops by. She’s adding the boutique, and my corner of artwork, to the « what to see in Quebec City » talk she gives onboard.

Massachusetts really is following me around this week.

Nouveau chapitre / new chapter: I’ll be at Trampoline: Boutique Éphémère (600 rue St-Joseph E) three days a week all through September — come find me and my work in person.

It’s part of a shared-space incubator with the Fonds d’Emprunt Québec, and I’m sharing the space with some genuinely lovely local makers: candles from Feu&Co.™️ , soaps from Quai des Bulles - Savonnerie, prints from Fred Jourdain, essential oils from Éco-Douceur, and more. Come smell the candles and stay for the paintings.

New work going up soon too — I’ll be swapping the exhibition out as early as next week, so what you see this week might not be there next.

Québec people — you know where to find me now. Drop by, say hi, watch me butcher French in real time.

From start to finish…

I painted this piece in a very meditative mood, listening to this one song on repeat. It brought me to some dark places, I even remember kicking the canvas at some point while I was painting it. It was unlike anything I’d ever done, and was the first time an eye showed up in my work.

I loved this self-portrait, turned it into prints and bookmarks and even fridge magnets, and kept it displayed prominently in my sunroom studio even while some people told me it was a bit too intense.

And this weekend, almost five years to the day after I painted this piece, I brought it with me to a festival and it found its person.

So this morning I said goodbye to “The Water’s Fine” and said hello to the biggest sale of my career to date.

Thanks so much to my newest collector, and also to everyone who’s supported me and cheered me on for the last five years.
