Maker's Night is taking place TONIGHT! (October 8th, 7-9pm)

Join us for a relaxing evening in our gallery space from 7-9pm as we come together to make, chat, and hang out! Maker's Nights are for all ages, you can bring a project that you're working on- or just yourself! We will have some supplies to experiment with if you're interested!

Notice to Parents: While we welcome people of all ages at Maker’s Nights, we require that children, or groups of children, 11 and under be accompanied by at least one trusted adult. This is to ensure the safety, enjoyment and care for everyone at Maker’s Nights

‼️REMINDER: Free to play will be going ahead tomorrow (October 7th) from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM‼️

Thank you to everyone who has registered and has shown interest in our Free to Play events. We are now FULLY BOOKED for the rest of the program!

We still have spots available for an upcoming 2-day Wood Lithography Workshop with Artist in Residence Margaret Joba-Woodruff!

Participants will learn the steps to draw, ink, and print their own designs using a miniature etching press to produce a small edition of handmade prints. Margaret will also share about her process of testing and experimentation while learning Mokulito over the past year with support from many generous printmakers around the world and a Canada Council Research Grant.

This workshop is for ages 15+ and will take place over two days from October 10 to 11, 1-4pm. Workshop registration covers both of these days.

On November 15th, join Artist in Residence Hannah Ferguson for an afternoon of chalk making, experimental writing, and talking about the weather!

Did you know that seashells, eggshells, and chalk are all made of the same material–calcium carbonate? Come learn how to make your own chalk with seashells collected in and around Port Union!

Using photocopied texts on weather and maritime signalling Hannah has collected for her residency, we will also do some magnetic poetry-style experimental writing. How do we talk about the weather? What kind of messages does the weather send us? What kind of language does it have? What’s the forecast and how do we feel about it?

Weather permitting, we will be using our chalk to translate our messages to pavement, as a collaborative, ephemeral text!

Through this sustainable material workshop, we will explore how everyday materials–shells for sure, but maybe also rain, fog, etc. – can be reframed and reused in our practices. All materials will be provided, but please bring a small container to bring your chalk home in!

Say hello to Amber-Lynn Thorne, one of our Artists in Residence for October!

Amber-Lynn Thorne describes herself as “an artist who owes everything to the ocean.” She is from Thornlea, NL, on the isthmus of the Avalon Peninsula, where generations of her family have fished. She is an interdisciplinary visual artist and graduate of the Visual Arts Program at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland. Thorne’s practice incorporates imagery symbolic of the fishery and the ocean. Her work represents a reflection on, and metaphorical continuation of, her family’s fishing legacy.

We can't wait to see what Amber-Lynn creates during her time here at UHA!

Join Artist in Residence Tara Young on November 14th, 1-4pm to learn how to turn ocean waste into sculptures!

This workshop guides participants through the process of creating artwork using ocean waste. It will begin with a beach cleanup (weather permitting) where participants can gather the waste that they will then take into the studio to be transformed. Tara will guide participants through her process of turning ocean waste into sculptures of local fish through shaping, combining, and painting.

Say hello to Margaret Joba-Woodruff, one of our Artists in Residence for October!

Margaret Joba-Woodruff is a visual artist whose practice employs an interdisciplinary approach to printmaking to consider intersections of land, body, family, memory, and labour. After receiving a BFA in Visual Art at the University of British Columbia, she became a worker-owner of the Vancouver Artist Labour Union Cooperative before relocating to St John’s, Ktaqmkuk in 2022 to spend a year in residence as the Don Wright Scholar at St Michael’s Printshop. Her work has been supported by the Canada Council for the Arts and ArtsNL, and has been exhibited across Canada, in the UK, Puerto Rico, and Taiwan. After two years living and working in Ktaqmkuk, Joba-Woodruff is once again living as a guest on the homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlilwətaɬ Nations.

We can't wait to see what Margaret creates during her time here at UHA!
