Whether you've written poetry before or haven't thought of it since high school, this relaxed, welcoming session will surprise you.

You'll:
· Discover a playful, low-pressure way to create
· Explore language and imagery in a whole new light
· Leave with a poem you made yourself, yes, really

Last night we honoured those we’ve lost to the toxic street drug crisis, those still fighting, and the family and loved ones grieving.💜

In this season of pushing people further into the margins, we invited people in. Thank you to all who bravely spoke, made art, and held space to share this collective grief together.

The opposite of addiction is connection. 💜

We’re participating in cmhahkpr’s and the H.O.P.E. Learning Centre’s - Splash of Hope! Friday August 28th from 11am-3pm in Victoria Park Cobourg.

Creative work is healing work. From the beginning, art has been central to what we do. Splash of Hope will celebrate how art has been part of the journey for so many community members.

We’ll be there offering story sticks as a creative, story telling activity.

You can also expect:

Live music from the Reachers. A band made up of musicians with lived experienced channeling positive energy into music making.

The Short Order Poetry poetry crew. Making connections and personalized poems for attendee’s on vintage typewriters.

A community BBQ from hope_and_light_urban_outreach

Creative opportunities and activities from participants of CMHA’s H.O.P.E. Learning Centre’s programs.

Live spray paint art with our dear friend, Gabe Denis. Hear his inspiring journey of creativity and healing. You won’t want to miss it!

It was an extra special day at the Art Hive this week. We were all overjoyed to see this smile again, made even sweeter when he asked Hilda Van Netten to paint a fresh portrait of him. Thank you Hilda, for all that you bring to our space. ♥️

We recognize there may be some misunderstanding about the work happening at our Cobourg Hive, so we wanted to share a little more about what some of our programming actually looks like.

Since January 2025, our Monday Community Drop-in has offered a welcoming place to eat, connect, contribute and belong. Several participants are part of making the space happen - helping with set-up, clean-up, sweeping the sidewalk & garbage removal.

From March 2025 to June 2026, we recorded more than 3,500 connections through the Monday Drop-in, bringing together people experiencing poverty, substance use, living outdoors and residents of Transition House.

The Hive is one of the few consistently welcoming and inclusive spaces available to many marginalized community members in Cobourg. It’s a place where donations of hygiene products, clothing, wound-care supplies, sunscreen & cold-weather gear can be shared directly with people who need them.

Our Friday Community Breakfast is another important space for connection. From March 2025 to June 2026, we recorded more than 3,000 connections. We moved the breakfast to Calvary Baptist Church in January 2026 to accommodate this growing program. We’re grateful for the church’s support.

The breakfast is also a place where community supports come together. FareShare Foodbank, The Help Centre, CHCN Nurse Practitioners, County Outreach, CMHA, Hope & Light Urban Outreach, Community Paramedics and volunteers with deep community relationships. The work happens together.

It’s important to highlight that from August 2025 to April 2026, our Cobourg programming was supported by one staff member and many incredible volunteers. With the addition of a second staff member, our combined staffing hours at the CBG Hive are currently 37 hours per week. We are consistently punching above our weight. The work is possible through private donors, community and corporate grants.

These are two examples of our weekly programming. We also offer hands-on creative work, a recovery program and community learnings. This has always been our work - building relationships and creating welcoming spaces where everyone has a place to connect, participate, contribute and belong.

This August, we’re creating space to move, breathe, connect and simply be.

Join us for four Monday afternoons at St. Paul’s church in Port Hope for a gentle, inclusive yoga practice followed by meaningful conversation and connection.

Together, we’ll explore ways to support well-being, awaken hope and deepen our sense of belonging, creating a space where everyone feels welcome and heard.

We’re ridiculously excited to share that our dear friend Carolyn has an exhibit of her stunning photography at the Black Cat Cobourg for the month of August!

If you know Carolyn, you know that she’s part artist (photography, watercolour, jewelry, poetry - you name it, she can make it!) part survivor 💙, part teacher (pictured here Carolyn is teaching us about monarch butterflies) and part mystical magical being.

Check out her show this month. Better yet - come out and celebrate her this Friday August 7th, 6-8pm at the Black Cat for her exhibits opening. We’re so glad to know you Carolyn!

Starting from a place of aspirations and assets was a refreshing shift for the Community 101 ‘Addressing Homelessness - Celebrating Strengths, Naming Challenges’ at the Cobourg Public Library on Monday night.

When we begin with what is here and what is good, our minds can look at the limitations and solutions with fresh perspective.

Much gratitude to everyone who attended with care, passion, and a vision for a healthy community that we all know and love.

Thank you to Christian Harvey, Executive Director of Transition House for sharing his experience and expertise with the group and for co-facilitating the conversation alongside Aimee.

Be on the lookout for more Community 101’s in the near future. We’re so pleased to bring these conversations back into our programming!

It’s a joy to see the Urban Community Garden grow! The garden is possible because of participants who sowed the seeds in the spring, donations of seedlings from dear friends, and the SEEDit program. Now the beans are popping, tomato’s are on the way, and the greens are in their final days. There are plenty of herbs ready to be picked, too!
