The MN–S government knows there’s a great deal of interest when it comes to Métis harvesting rights. This past weekend, the Métis Nation Legislative Assembly (MNLA) passed a resolution directing the MN–S government to finalize harvesting negotiations with Saskatchewan, which began with the initial passage of the Métis Wildlife and Conservation Act 1994, by the MNLA. The MN–S and Saskatchewan reengaged in negotiations in 2020, but a formal agreement has yet to be reached.

While the MNLA resolution affirms Métis harvesting rights, MN–S is not in a position to support individual litigation. Instead, it will continue to prioritize a good-faith, government-to-government relationship with Saskatchewan. The resolution does not affect the areas of Saskatchewan where Métis harvesters may hunt without risk of prosecution. The MNLA has authorized the Minister of Lands, Resources, Agriculture and Environment and the Minister of Self-Government and Self-Determination to carry this work forward. They will provide a progress report at the Fall 2026 MNLA.

Please RSVP by June 8th!
