For Ganesha, the base is extra important because of the form - big belly, heavy elephant head, trunk hanging forward, and 4 arms. He is very front-heavy, so your construction is ideal.
Here is how your base works for Ganesha specifically:
In tradition, Ganesha sits on a low square platform. What i made with the clay coils and then filled in with coconut husk or papers. Most artists keep the final sculpture with that square ground included - you can later carve a border or add texture to it.
