Today at The County Museums , I did a close reading of the cloth — bringing it outside for a good look.

First of all, it has three sections, not two! The middle two sections alternate in repeat, but there is actually a side border too… Hopefully that can help in figure it the exact threading.

Second, on the second picture, it’s clear that the ground cloth (the beige portion) a mixture of sizes. Warp is a double-ply while the tabby weft is a single ply. I won’t be able to reproduce this composition because singly ply cotton, in this small size, isn’t commercially available. But I will use 2/8 natural for the warp, and 2/8 natural for the weft. The pattern warn is a single ply woo, quite significantly twisted. Currently, my test uses a 2 ply but will try with my single ply in the next test.

On the last pic, I also noticed that there is no hemstitch and a few knots further along the fringes. Not my usual style, but interesting!

Also, I had planned to use my software to figure it out, but my old computer doesn’t hold a charge and so, I’m doing it the old fashioned way!

Update on my Artist Residency with . I’m having my own picnic today!

Enjoying a nice, smoke free day outside. Interesting shapes are emerging in my gamp… although not the motif that I am searching for!

Another beautiful day the Rose House Museum, in Waupoos.

I’ve spent the morning setting up my gamp on my little Dorethy. (See 2nd picture ) I’m enjoying being outside and in the shade. Sure it’s hot, but it is very peaceful too.

Third picture is the notation for the different motifs that I am trying out. (3rd picture)

First picture is a traditional ‘wheel’ motif. Based on what I am seeing emerge here, I’m realizing that the historical coverlet is quite fine indeed — it may have been made with 2/16 yarn in the warp. I wasn’t expecting to go so fine! Anyway, the research continues.

I’m taking in week “off” next week — since I’ll be hard at it setting up our PECQG show. Come visit us — including the County Museum — at the Wellington arena!

Second week of residency at the Rose House Museum, in Waupoos, in Prince Edward County, with Beautiful historical home, beautiful weather, roses in bloom - it’s been lovely to spend la St-Jean Baptiste here.

Other than enjoying the place, I’m trying to reproduce this coverlet… and it’s harder than I thought. Last week, I brought my historical books to find the pattern for this piece… and didn’t find it! I was able to locate a pattern made right here in Waupoos, very grid like, (see slide 4), which I then put on my big table loom and wove today. (Slide 3)

But the scale is all wrong! I used wool singles for the warp, and a large bulky yarn for the pattern weft, and it’s interesting… but way too large. I’ll still wash it and see how it emerges, but I don’t feel closer to the mystery cloth.

Next test, an overshot gamp!

Happy Viktoria Day weekend! This is the start of my season and it started with a ROAR.

This year, and I will at the , demonstrating weaving and machine knitting on alternating weekends (ish) .

First Wellington Community Market of 2026 — at the United Church

I’m here with the loom, thinking I would set it up. But too much to do still. It’s been a really fast start to the season. With Storied Textile, my partnership with — we are actually at both Wellington markets today.

Come say hi and, of course, Happy Viktoria Day weekend.
