They took the shoes off my ancestors’ feet to humiliate them, to mark them as owned, to remind them daily that they controlled even how they touched the ground. Barefootness was supposed to be a badge of shame.

But here’s what they didn’t understand: you can’t shame a people out of their soul. What they meant to break, we turned into a way back home. Every time my bare feet touch the earth, I’m not remembering their cruelty — I’m remembering that my ancestors survived it. That’s why I stand on the ground the way they were forced to, and I feel power where they were meant to feel pain.

This is why we preserve our culture. Not because it’s trendy. Because our people paid for it. Every tradition we keep alive is a receipt — proof that they tried to erase us and failed. When we braid our hair, cook our food, speak our names, dance our dances, and yes, plant our feet in the soil, we are refusing the version of the story where we disappear.

Culture is how we talk to our ancestors and how we speak to the ones not born yet. It’s the inheritance no one can repossess. So I’ll keep passing it down — loud, proud, and barefoot. 🖤
