🌟 Creature Feature: Common Sand Dollar 🌟

Meet this week’s featured creature: the Common Sand Dollar (Echinarachnius parma)! 🌊🤍 Often found along sandy beaches, these flattened creatures are actually living animals beneath their delicate, flower-like patterns!

🤯 Fun Fact: Common Sand Dollars feed using tiny movable spines and cilia on their underside to transport microscopic food particles like plankton and detritus toward their mouth… basically turning sand into a conveyor belt of snacks (Smithsonian Ocean)!

Have you ever found one of these “sea coins” washed up on shore? 🐚✨

🌟 Creature Feature: Ocean Pout 🌟

Meet this week’s featured creature: the Ocean Pout (Zoarces americanus)! 🐟 Often overlooked because of its eel-like appearance, this bottom-dwelling fish is a common resident of cold North Atlantic waters, where it hides among rocks and seafloor habitats!

🤯 Fun Fact: Ocean Pouts produce natural antifreeze proteins in their blood that help prevent ice crystals from forming in their bodies… This allows them to survive in frigid waters that would be dangerous for many other fish (NCBI Bookshelf) 🐟
