This passion of mine is becoming a lost art it seems, the silly little doodles replaced with quick, generative, recycled but fully formed pieces- cheap thrills and endless content to absorb- and while there is nothing wrong with liking that idea and subscribing to it; I find it drives me so much further towards this, the imperfection, the curious play and the 'f**k around and find out' if you will, especially when inspiration truly spikes.
I create from a place within myself looking for peace, for stillness and for the ability to calm the noise and feel the feelings, to get in touch with the parts of myself I still don't know how to talk to, so I sit in creative space.
The human-ness of it all, ya know?
This is what leads to so many of my creations, on skin, in physical form made out of clay, fabric, wood, paint and stone and the like.
As annoyed as the rise of generative material has made me, I think it inspires me more; I recognize that there is nothing that I can do about the ever changing worlds of art, tattooing and those industries as a whole but what I can do is tend my own interests and abilities, to learn, to grow, to do better, move slower, take in more.
There is space for both to exist and I love people on both sides of this fence so I refuse to get too angry about it.
I often tell my clients to feed me their inspiration and references like they would prompt AI, let me take a whack at it. That seems to help, some people bring me AI references and it helps to give me a very real idea of what they are looking for but I do my best to direct them to organic references, there are endless online!
I have so much more love for every mistake I make these days because they are such a subtle and beautiful reminder that I am just a human, learning and mastering a skill that I am driven to by nothing other than blind ambition, passion and a want to live my life as I see fit❤️✨
To the human artists out there who create from a place of tending the soul, please keep doing your silly little doodles, you need those to be able to really...fully, live!
