Susan Schaefer - Artist

Susan Schaefer - Artist Arts Ambassador | Instructor | Publisher | Curator From the Prairies...to the West Coast...and Beyond! I welcome commissions.

I am an International Artist, now residing on the West Coast of Canada. I love to paint landscapes, especially prairie and west coast scenes. I also have a fondness for Mexico, which shows up in my artwork as well.

For years, I have had this image in mind for a painting reference. All along, I envisioned it to be a horizontal piece. Once I started doing my sketches, as taught by Mike Svob in my first class with him in 2013, I realized, "Wow - this would be more effective as a vertical."

This is what happens when you spend the weekend 'Pushing Colour' with Mike SVOB.

Not a bad little exercise. It's certainly brighter than I normally would paint. Moving forward, I have a few new tips to add to my box of tricks. That is why I love taking workshops. There is always something to learn or to refresh your brain.

What a weekend! I am totally exhausted, yet my head is spinning with new ideas that I am anxious to try. I absolutely enjoy hanging with fellow artists, sharing stories and being creative together. Thank you to everyone who attended another successful event.

From the Prairie Whispers Series, I present "Beside the Fence".
Day Lilies have always been easy to grow, especially in the prairies, where they thrive during the hot summers. When I first bought my 'little house on the prairies', one of my girlfriends said, "oh you have to plant some day lilies." She was right!
This painting will brighten up your day.

View in person at the Brazen Poppy Gallery in Parksville.

I've recently had the pleasure of teaching an Acrylic 101 Beginners class. This is one of my favourite classes to teach, as the students are quite eager to learn. I try to work through some of their apprehension, hoping that by the end of the four weeks, they will feel comfortable working with a new medium.

Here are a couple of demo pieces from that class. I had the students work on a simple tonal landscape, while looking for shapes. Once they got the hang of that, I asked them to do it again using colour.

Next, we did floral designs. The goal was to have fun with colour, use larger brushes, and loosen up.

I am so proud of my students and what they accomplished. Itโ€™s always interesting to see what happens on the canvas, as well as the internal changes.

Thank you to the Old School House in Qualicum Beach for hosting this course.
