👀 Looking back at an amazing 2nd edition of the Ottawa New Music Festival! 🥹

🤩 Here are some snaps by Curtis Perry Photography of our "Awake and Dreaming" concert on November 7th.

🙌 Congratulations to Katherine Dowling on the monumental recital of Alice Ping Yee Ho's solo piano works. It was incredible. ✨

🎶 We were also treated to the world premiere of our Emerging Composer-in-Residence Shanti Sivarulrasa's new violin duo "First Encounters" with violinist Maria Nenoiu.

🙏 Shanti's residency was made possible with the support of the Canadian Music Centre and 10,000 Hours Piano Rehearsal Studios. This year's festival would not have been possible without the support of City of Ottawa, CMC, Ottawa Art Gallery - Galerie d'art d'Ottawa, Ottawa Steinway Gallery, 10,000 Hours Piano Rehearsal Studios, and the amazing and open minded audiences that joined us both nights! 🥰

🎻 Artist Spotlight: Shanti Sivarulrasa 🎶

Born in Ottawa and now based in Kjipuktuk (Halifax), composer and violinist Shanti Sivarulrasa is quickly making her mark on Canada’s new music scene. Currently completing her Bachelor of Music at Dalhousie University on a Fountain Performing Arts Scholarship, Shanti has already performed with Symphony Nova Scotia, premiering her own work Chrysalis for solo violin and orchestra.

Her music has been championed by leading ensembles including the Array Ensemble, Alkali Collective, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra. As co-creative director of the Nuovo Concert Series and first violinist of the Rostova String Quartet, she continues to shape Canada’s contemporary soundscape.

✨ Catch the world premiere of her newest piece, First Encounters, a duet for two violins performed by Shanti and Maria Nenoui, on Friday, November 7 at 7pm.

🧐🙌 More about Katherine: A frequent artist-in-residence at the Orlando Festival (Netherlands) and Avaloch Farm Music Institute (USA), she has held fellowships at the Tanglewood Music Center, Britten-Pears Young Artist Program, and The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. As a soloist and member of Gruppo Montebello, she appears on eight acclaimed recordings on the Etcetera label, with broadcasts on CBC, Radio-Canada, BBC, and National Radio 4 (Netherlands).
Recent highlights include performing Mozart’s Triple Concerto with Angela Hewitt and Silvie Cheng at Ottawa Chamberfest, recital debuts in Vienna and The Hague, national tours with violinist Kerry DuWors, and a recording of Alice Ping-Yee Ho’s piano works for Leaf Music. She has premiered over one-hundred new works by composers such as Louis Andriessen and John Harbison.
Katherine credits pianist Gilbert Kalish and conductors Henk Guittart and Oliver Knussen as formative influences.
