We are deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Cree‑Mennonite cellist and composer Cris Derksen, at just 45 years old.
An internationally respected, Juno‑nominated artist, Cris brought a powerful and unmistakable voice to contemporary music, weaving together classical training, Indigenous traditions, and electronic innovation. Their work resonated across the country and around the world, and here at the NAC, we were honoured to welcome Cris as part of Matriarchs Uprising, where they performed with the Cris Derksen Quartet alongside a remarkable community of Indigenous artists. Cris was also an important part of NAC-led artistic programming for the Canadian Pavilion at World Expo in Dubai (2022), and in Japan (2025), where they served as composer.
Cris’s artistry, generosity, and commitment to storytelling through music leave a lasting legacy. Our thoughts are with their family, collaborators, and all those who were touched by their work.

Finaliste aux prix JUNO et artiste de renommée mondiale originaire du territoire du Traité no 8 en Alberta, Cris Derksen a fait entendre une voix puissante et singulière dans la création musicale contemporaine, en puisant avec finesse dans sa formation classique, ses racines autochtones et l’électronique pour créer une musique qui défie les genres.
Son œuvre a résonné à travers le pays et dans le monde entier, et ici même au CNA, nous avons eu l’honneur d’accueillir Cris dans le cadre de Matriarchs Uprising, où elle s’est produite avec le Cris Derksen Quartet aux côtés d’une remarquable communauté d’artistes autochtones. Cris a également joué un rôle important dans la programmation artistique dirigée par le CNA pour le pavillon canadien à l’Exposition universelle de Dubaï (2022) et du Japon (2025), où elle a agi à titre de compositrice.
Son art, sa générosité et son engagement envers la transmission d’histoires par la musique laisseront un héritage durable. Nos pensées accompagnent sa famille, ses proches et l’ensemble des personnes touchées par son œuvre.
