This June marks the 20th anniversary of the Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre! 🎉🐺

You may be wondering why we aren’t celebrating this big milestone this month - and the answer is: we will be, just a little later. We’ve decided to postpone our anniversary celebrations until September when the summer is over. We want to ensure that more of our community, elders, supporters, partners, and loved ones can join us.

June is a very, very busy time of year. Families are wrapping up the school year, vacations are beginning, and we want to ensure this milestone can be celebrated together.

As we reflect on the last 20 years in our “new” building, we’re sharing a few photos from our archives of the opening celebrations of where it all began - the ‘Nk’Mip Desert & Heritage Centre’ that opened in 2002 before our new Centre was built. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has been part of this journey and helped make the Centre what it is today.

We look forward to celebrating with you this September, and continuing to share some photos from the archive over the summer months ♥️

Have you ever seen a spadefoot toad before?

Spadefoot toads are remarkable burrowing amphibians, named after the hardened, spade-like structures on their hind feet that act like tiny shovels. They dig backwards into the earth to bury their bodies and regulate their body temperature to stay cool and moist beneath the surface.

In our language, spadefoot toad is psqʷaqs, come visit us to learn more about how spadefoot toad got its name! 🐸
