These beauties are coming to Purls!

I already have three big blue Mama baskets in my own home, and I knew long before PURLS was even ready to open that I wanted to carry them in the shop. They’re colorful, beautifully made, incredibly sturdy and just so useful.

Big blue Moma is a Canadian fair trade company, and their baskets are hand woven in Bolgatanga, Ghana, where some of the finest baskets in Africa are produced. Every single one is unique, and the colours, patterns, and shapes make choosing this first collection for the shop very difficult!

Use them for shopping, carrying or storing yarn, or simply enjoy them in your home. But what makes them even more special is knowing that your purchase supports the people of Bolgatanga as they work to sustain a handcraft that has been part of that region for hundreds of years.

I’m so excited to finally have a whole collection of them coming to Purls but I’m going to have a hard time not keeping any for myself.

I know, it’s a lot. 😂 Three different pages are a whole lot to keep track of. We’re just trying to cover all our bases and give each part of what we do its own space.

Follow what interests you, but keep in mind that each page will have its own unique content and we won’t often be cross-posting everything.

Purls is where you’ll find shop news, products and everything happening in the boutique. Studio No.2 will be home to workshops, classes, events and everything upstairs. And Ravelution Yarn will continue to be all about the yarn, colourways and what’s happening in the dye pots.

The bathroom floors are in, and I LOVE how them. ✨
From the beginning, I’ve wanted Purls and Studio No.2 to have an eclectic feel. A mix of old and new, vintage and modern, a little quirky, a little unexpected, and full of personality.
So when I found this tile, I knew.
The graphic star pattern has such a great retro feel, and the slightly weathered finish gives it just enough age and character. It feels completely at home with everything else we’re bringing into the spaces.
And yes, I realize I’m getting excited about bathroom floors. 😂 But after months of looking at plans, construction materials and unfinished rooms, these are the details that finally make it feel like the vision in my head is starting to appear in real life. Are you starting to see it too?!

Sneak Peek 👀
5 new lights with a little vintage soul.

I fell in love with these fixtures the moment I saw them. The green glass, the scalloped edges, the gold details… I just knew I had to have them.

All five will hang in a line across the entrance, and while they may be new, they have that vintage feel I keep finding myself drawn to for the shop.

They’re also giving you a little peek at part of the Purls palette. Hint: green is definitely having a moment around here. 💚

A vintage pattern book collection wasn’t exactly on my bingo card.
I was curious about vintage patterns one day and started looking around to see what was out there. That curiosity quickly sent me down a rabbit hole, and I started thinking about how wonderful it would be to have some of these old patterns in the shop as a resource library. A collection people could flip through, learn from and find inspiration in.
Then I found. Sharon on Kijiji.
She graciously invited us into her home and showed us her amazing collection, and it was instantly obvious… I couldn’t leave any of them behind.

So of course, I took them all!

There are roughly 50 books, some dating back to the 1930s, with patterns for babies and children, teenagers, women and men, and everything from sweaters and dresses to accessories, crochet and more.
These books are little archives. They preserve the designs techniques and styles of generations of makers who came before us. I love the idea of Purls being a steward of that history, caring for them while also keeping them accessible so the designs can continue to live on.

And although some patterns are very much of their time 😆, I was surprised by how many are completely wearable today.
Which makes me wonder… What happens when we take a beautiful pattern from the past and make it with the yarn and colours we have today?

And yes, I also came home from Sharron’s with an incredible collection of vintage buttons, but those deserve their own post. So stay tuned!

Okay, this may be one of my favourite finds for Purls so far. ❤️
We took a little drive out to Chelsea, Quebec to pick up this beauty, where it had been living its most recent life as a vanity in someone’s washroom.
But its story started long before that.
This was originally a treadle sewing machine made by the White Sewing Machine Company, founded in 1858 by Thomas H. White. White went on to become one of the major American sewing machine manufacturers and a competitor to Singer.
The sewing machine itself is long gone, but the cast iron White treadle base, wheel and wooden cabinet remain, along with those wonderful little drawers that once held needles, bobbins, thread and other sewing notions.
At some point along the way, someone gave it a completely new purpose and turned it into a vanity. And now it gets another chapter at Purls.
I love that it shows its age. The worn wood, scratches and imperfections are part of its story, and I have absolutely no intention of making it look new.
There’s something pretty special about bringing a piece of textile history into a fibre shop more than a century later. ❤️

One of the things I’ve been searching for as Purls comes together is pieces with a story.
This beautiful Victorian parlour chair is believed to date back to the late 1800s. There are several details that point to that period, including the rounded balloon back, the richly carved walnut frame, the graceful cabriole legs, and the original porcelain casters. Chairs like this would have been found in Victorian parlours, where families gathered to visit, read, sew, embroider, and spend time together.
My favourite part is the original hand-stitched needlepoint panel. Knowing that someone patiently stitched every one of those tiny stitches more than a century ago is something I find incredibly special. The chair has had some restoration over the years, but that beautiful piece of needlework remains.
Is it perfect? Not at all.
The wood has marks from a long life. There are repairs. It shows its age.
But that’s exactly why I love it.
Every scratch, every repair, and every worn edge is part of its story. Instead of hiding its history, it wears it proudly. Kind of a metaphor for life isn’t it?

I like to imagine the conversations this chair has witnessed over the last 130 or 140 years. The hands that rested on its arms. The people who sat with their knitting, sewing, or embroidery nearby. It feels fitting that its next chapter will be in a fibre arts shop, surrounded by people continuing those same traditions.
I think this chair has finally found the right home.

I’m having so much fun deciding what to bring into Purls and discovering products I can’t wait to share with the fibre community.

One of my latest finds is Hook Line & Tinker a small-batch Canadian craft studio founded by Laurie Dolhan in Nova Scotia.

These kits were an easy yes for me. I fell in love with the creativity, the whimsy, and the simplicity of the designs. They’re the kind of projects that make you smile.
I also think they’re the perfect gateway into embroidery. Whether you’ve been curious to try a new fibre art, you’re looking for a thoughtful gift, or you want to stitch a whimsical little piece to display in your home, these kits are just so much fun.

One of my hopes for Purls is that it inspires people to explore all kinds of fibre arts. Knitting and crochet will always be at the heart of the shop, but I also want it to be a place where you can discover something new.

Now comes the hard part... choosing which designs to bring in! If you’ve ever wanted to try embroidery, what kind of design would you be most excited to see?

Another wholesale order has been placed for Purls, and I couldn’t be more excited! ✨

This time it’s Firefly Notes , a Canadian company that creates the most beautiful handcrafted notions tins. 🇨🇦

I’ve been using these tins myself for quite a while, and I absolutely love them. They’re perfect for keeping stitch markers, darning needles, and all those little notions organized so they’re always easy to find.
I also fell in love with their beautiful vintage-inspired artwork. It has the same timeless, vintage feel we’re creating throughout the shop, so they felt like the perfect fit for Purls.

Choosing which designs to bring in was nearly impossible because there were so many I loved! Swipe to see a few of my favourites that you’ll be able to find at Purls very soon.
