I've had quite a few people ask how they could dye yarn with dandelions themselves after following along with my recent experiment.

Rather than trying to answer everyone individually, I decided to write a blog post documenting my process.

Inside, I've shared what I did, what worked, what didn't, some of the supplies I used, and a few lessons I learned along the way.
If you've ever been curious about natural dyeing, wondered whether dandelions can actually dye yarn, or thought about trying it yourself, I hope you'll find it helpful.

One thing I didn't expect? How much respect I would gain for natural dyers and the way it had to be done before the invention of commercial dyes. The process is slower, less predictable, and far more difficult to reproduce than working with acid dyes, that's for sure.

The post follows the experiment from start to finish, from harvesting the flowers and mordanting the yarn to the dye baths, black tea modification, and the final skeins: Wallflower and Twice Steeped.

🌼 Dandelion Yarn Giveaway 🌼

Earlier this spring, I picked handfuls of common dandelions from my own backyard and set out to see what colour they would create on merino yarn.

After multiple dye baths, overnight soaks, and plenty of patience, I ended up with two different naturally dyed colourways:

🍵 Twice Steeped (left)
Dyed with dandelions and finished with a second bath of black tea.

☀️ Wallflower (right)
Dyed using only dandelions.

The original undyed skein is shown in the carousel so you can see just how much colour these humble flowers were able to create. And now I’d love to share them with you!

Two winners will each receive two skeins (100% Superwash Merino, 1-ply) from this small-batch natural dye experiment:

A little website update✨

Private shopping appointments at the Ravelution Yarn Home Studio for a while now, but I’m happy to announce you can officially book (or cancel) your own timeslot directly through the Ravelution Yarn website instead of messaging back-and-forth.

If you’d like to browse the yarn in person, compare colour ways side-by-side, squish bases before choosing, or discuss a custom dye project, appointments can now be reserved online in just a few clicks.

While Purls is being created, these private studio shopping appointments will be available for a limited time, so take advantage of the one on one while you can!

Well it’s finally happening!! Demo is almost done and what a difference already. The middle wall is gone and look at all that natural light coming in!! Thank you to ID Squared and their team of contractors for all their hard work. Can’t wait to start the next phase!

I went to visit my aunt this week to pick up a vintage vanity for Purls and ended up leaving with a few more pieces I hadn’t planned on, very generously gifted to me by her and my uncle.

The vanity is likely from the 1930s or 40s, with soft curved lines and a slightly Art Deco feel. The kind of piece that was made to be used every day. The finish is worn in places, and the drawer handles might not be original, but that’s exactly what I love about it. You can tell it’s been used and has stories to tell.

The second piece was completely unexpected, but I couldn’t leave it behind when it was so generously offered.
An authentic Victrola from the late 1920s! Made in Montreal, this hand-cranked unit once filled a home with music from artists like Hank Williams and Bunny Berigan, long before electric record players were part of everyday life. It still spins, but will need a bit of TLC before it can play the albums it came with.

These aren’t just nice decor pieces. They feel like they belong in Purls because they carry something real with them. And the fact that they came from my aunt and uncle makes it even more meaningful.

It’s kind of amazing to think these once-forgotten pieces will have a second life in a space where people will gather and make things with their hands.

I’ll be heading back soon to pick up two more pieces that didn’t fit in the truck. They’ll be used as display in the shop, and I can’t wait to show you.

It feels especially fitting to be sharing this on Mother’s Day. So much of what we make, keep, and pass down comes from the women in our lives.

Introducing Vivaldi’s Spring 🌿

You helped chose the name, and honestly, it couldn’t fit better!

This colourway feels like that early shift in the season, when everything starts to come back slowly but all at once. Fresh, soft neutrals, and warmer earth tones all sit together, layered just like in nature.

This yarn has movement and is teaming with life, you can almost hear the sounds of spring.

Dyed on our Merino Shimmer base, the soft sparkle catches the light subtly, making this not only magical but very wearable. Perfect for shawls, socks, and next to skin garments calling for a touch of spring.

Right now, it’s running out of my tiny dining room shop… and honestly, it’s a bit magical in its own way. Grid walls of hand dyed yarn, project bags, graphic tees, and handmade stitch markers, all packed into a small space.

That carpet is going. There’s no debate there.
But that tile…I genuinely can’t decide.
Part of me loves it. It’s whimsical, a little unexpected, and just bold enough to work. I also love that this piece of flooring is original from when the unit was a garage decades ago!
But a part of me is wondering if it’s just slightly off or maybe a little too much.
So I need your opinions!
✨Keep the tile and design around it
✨Or rip it out and start fresh
Be honest, I can take it! 😝

People keep on trying the door…

When I met my new shop neighbours a few weeks ago they confessed to playing a fun game of counting how many customers came to my unit expecting the old yarn shop to be there. Well, Friday I witnessed it myself and decided I really needed to put something in my windows asap while I wait for the official window wraps to be done.
