I can't say whether this is true or not, but what is true is - you will never fall asleep during one of our concerts!

The older composer was furious! 🎹🎶

In 1853, a 20-year-old Johannes Brahms joined the Hungarian violinist Eduard Reményi on tour, which led them to Weimar where Franz Liszt was holding court. When asked to perform on the piano, Brahms shyly declined, but asked the older composer instead to read through the score of his Piano Sonata No.1. Liszt obligingly sight-read it flawlessly, and praised the young composer’s work.

When urged by those present to perform his own music, Liszt began playing his recently completed Sonata in B Minor. However, midway through the piece it became clear that Brahms had fallen asleep in his armchair.

Liszt was Brahms’ senior and already a highly celebrated composer. He was understandably offended, leaving the room without a word as soon as he finished the piece.
