💚🤍🧡 Our Legendary Soda Bread Baking Contest Returns for 2026 ✨🍞🔥

Every year on the Saturday of our Festival weekend, the Oakville Feis — a top‑tier Irish dance competition — runs inside the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre while the Fall Celtic Festival takes place outdoors on its grounds. Not only does this distinguished competition bring us some of the best Irish dancers in North America; it also originated our now‑famous Soda Bread Baking Contest — a community favourite where both judges and Festival guests get to taste and vote on the entries. ⭐👩‍🍳👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

A Short History of Soda Bread 🍞🇮🇪
Soda bread is one of Ireland’s most enduring food traditions. When baking soda (also called sodium bicarbonate) first arrived in the 1830s, Irish families discovered that it combined well with their soft wheat flour and sour milk or buttermilk to produce a quick, reliable loaf without yeast — simple, hearty, and inexpensive. ✨

The classic recipe used just four ingredients — flour, salt, baking soda, and buttermilk — making it a staple during periods of hardship like the Great Famine. The iconic cross cut on top helped the loaf bake evenly, but folklore added its own charming explanations: some said it blessed the bread, others said it let the fairies out. ⭐✝🧚‍♂️🧚🧚‍♂️

As conditions improved, households in Ireland and across the diaspora began adding additional ingredients such as sugar, eggs, raisins, caraway seeds, or other seasonings. Sometimes the raisin‑studded version is affectionately known as “spotted dog.” 🐶🍇

Today, soda bread remains a symbol of Irish resilience and home comfort — a loaf that carries history in every slice. 🍞❤️

🎃🔥✨🕯️🍂 Pumpkin Carving Is Coming to the Fall Celtic Festival — And the Celts Did It With Turnips First

Did you know that jack‑o’-lanterns — and Hallowe’en itself — are Celtic inventions?

Hallowe’en grew out of Samhain, the ancient Celtic festival marking the end of harvest and the beginning of winter. Villagers hollowed out turnips and other root vegetables, carving grotesque faces into them to ward off evil spirits. Glowing coals or candles were placed inside these carved roots to create the very first jack‑o’-lanterns. 🔥🕯️🌑✨🥔🔥

To honour and advance this proud autumn tradition, we invite Festival guests of all ages to carve either a Celtic‑inspired pumpkin 🎃 or a more traditional turnip. Submit your creation at our new Celtic Carving booth any time during the Festival weekend — Saturday 26 September and Sunday 27 September, 2026.
No entry fee. No registration involved. Just creative fire. 🎃🔥🔪✨🔥

Two prizes will be awarded:
• People’s Choice Prize, voted on by all Festival attendees
• Adjudicated Prize, judged by a professional pumpkin carver

🌟☘ 🎨🖌 Our Creative Visual Art Competition Returns for 2026 🖼🗿🖍✨

Every year on the Sunday of our Festival weekend, the 👑CrownandRose Feis🌹— a major Irish dance competition — runs inside the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre while the Fall Celtic Festival takes place outdoors on its grounds. Alongside world‑class Irish dance, the Feis also hosts a special creative contest in collaboration with our Festival, giving our guests a chance to celebrate Irish culture through visual art and share their creativity with the community.

☘🌈✨ Celebrate the beauty, culture, and spirit of Ireland through your visual imagination — whether inspired by landscapes, landmarks, history, heritage, music, dance, folklore, or other traditions.

Competition Details:
👨‍👩‍👧 Open to all ages and abilities
🎨 All artistic media accepted, including painting, drawing, sculpture, digital art, and mixed media
